We've just booked a nice little Highland fling for February, 4 nights at The Alexandra Hotel in Fort William and 4 nights at a lodge in Aviemore owned by a friend of mine based up there. Used to go to Aviemore every year but not been since 2018 so really looking forward to it as we love the Highlands
Thanks for the recommendation, rings a bell, think I've seen it in the past.If you like beer then check out the The Black Isle Bar in Fort William when you're there. Brilliant place.
I don’t remember the name of the place but a group of us climbing Ben Nevis met up the night before in a FW pub for a rendezvous and a quiet drink about 15 years ago. There was a Ceilidh on and few of us got carried away and ended up fucking mullered, dancing and singing along to Flower of Scotland at about 1.00am iirc. Made for an interesting climb the next day but was such a good night. Would definitely recommend finding somewhere with one on if at all possible, cracking fun.If you like beer then check out the The Black Isle Bar in Fort William when you're there. Brilliant place.
A pint of heavy is a joy to behold and a must in FW. I seem to recall the hand pumps displaying ‘70 shilling ale’ which is the formal term, but asking for a pint of ‘heavy’ is the way to go.Thanks for the recommendation, rings a bell, think I've seen it in the past.
Tbh I'm no beer connoisseur, when I do go in a pub I stick to Peroni, Moretti, Estrella and the like though I do enjoy a pint of Best when in Scotland
70/- was the duty paid on a cask of beer. This is a mid range ABV between 3.5 - 4.0%. As you state, it is referred to as 'Heavy'. Strangely the higher ABV beers (90/- and >6.0% ABV) are referred to as 'Wee Heavy'!A pint of heavy is a joy to behold and a must in FW.
