Europe ay it.“There were some positive bits around what we might not have to do as a club,” said O’Neil. “We are in a much better position than we were last summer, when we needed to sell players.
“We don’t need to sell anybody. If we didn’t want to see players, we could sell nobody this summer. But as I’ve said already, the money coming in (from owners Fosun) won’t be as big as it used to be, when we were able to sign players for £30million or £40 million and not sell anybody.
“That won’t be happening. But we have some assets out on loan that will either come back and make the group stronger or come back and be sold to give us some opportunity to do some business.
“But anybody that we’re desperate not to lose can definitely stay here. We’ve had discussions — at least the first of them — and come out of it with a good understanding of what we’re trying to do.”
Have you included the extra 5m for the stripey cunts losing last night?Fag packet maths, so happy for anyone to correct.
Player salary bill circa £40m
PL money this season circa £125m
Outstanding payments on transfers (based on FFP calls and excluding loans we can claim back) circa £50m. Deducts both money due in and out for Collins and Nunes
Generous additional salaries £10m
Sponsorship etc conservative £10m
We could spend circa £30m without needing to sell anybody, call it £20m with wages.
No, but there's something like £20m in gate receipts I've not included, a degree of which would be offset with overheadsHave you included the extra 5m for the stripey cunts losing last night?
I guess that's the hardest market to get it right, you're not getting the very best players for that price so risking a bit on potential, which we've been very bad on so far. I'd hope we'd find enough quality in the 10-20 range (Lemina, Gomes types) with a few free's and lower priced older players for squad depth such as Dawson. Not necessarily against us “not signing players for £30-40m”, as by and large, those signings are the ones that caused this mess in the first place. Our most recent success in the transfer market has been the likes of Dawson, Lemina - then Gomes etc. So if we’re shopping in that market i don’t automatically deem that as a bad thing.

I agree, but also a fairly exclusive exception at that price range.Matthias Cunha doesn't like this.
Probably out best signing since Neves.

Adding to this we need players for now. Gonzalez may prove an exceptional signing, a dud or anywhere in between and in the grand scheme of things £5m is nothing, but we can't afford to sign many players who aren't going to offer anything straight away given the squad size and budget. You can definitely find value for cheaper nobody can dispute that, the same way you can pay 30m for a complete dud but over a bigger sample size you obviously have a better chance of hitting on a successful signing in the higher range, they're obviously more expensive for a reason (whatever that may be.)
Unearthing gems for cheap is not a bad idea if you've got good scouting and recruitment teams but although we have found a few like Lemina and Dawson our most recent Summer window was less than ideal shopping in this range and we can't afford too many windows where you're business is Doherty, S.Bueno, Doyle and Bellegarde
Fair points, although I don't agree that Semedo is a £28m full back.Depends how far back you are talking, Semedo has probably provided value now. Further back Jimenez was an excellent buy, Nunes and Collins weren't great for us but we got more back than we paid for both so even though they weren't good players for Wolves it wasn't bad business in the end.
No. But I’d rather pay £28m for a player who we’ve got 4+ years of PL first team level (and retains at least some value) than half that on the RB equivalent of Santi Bueno or JRBFair points, although I don't agree that Semedo is a £28m full back.
View attachment 10410Our big spending realistically hasn’t been that bad. Other than the obvious two exceptions.
But one of those was the most corrupt/stupid/unprecedneted (pick however many you like) transfers for all the reasons we’ve done to death and the other was destined to fail before he joined as he didn’t want to be here and joined a toxic environment.
The others have either been first team regulars for an extended period or sold for a decent fee.
