The Race For The Top Four

It's now or never, and it's in our hands. Have we got the bottle to do it now?
 
I mean I hope so. Having a legit chance to get 6th is frankly fantastic, although Newcastle now being in 9th does make it even more maddening what an opportunity we have potentially wasted by not looking to add to the team properly this January, as their new additions have had a huge impact on the complete turnaround in form and shown how the points were there to be gained if we had been braver.

It was obvious that the rot at Newcastle would probably stop having binned Ashley and Bruce. They splashed the cash and reaped the rewards and will probably do it again in the summer. With a decent goalkeeper and centre half they could have a great season next year . I think most supporters hope for such investments when new owners take over . It shows intent. We did similar but have regressed badly over the last few seasons. Our business model looks very different to the one at Newcastle as well . Good luck to them . It’s about time they had something to cheer about . Nice folk by and large up there.

I think our current business model is very similar to Newcastle under Ashley.

Well it was more a comment on the poor quality, or at least wider parity of teams from say 7th onwards. Some of it was injuries but Newcastle only had 3 of their new signings in yesterday. The difference is that one of them looks a fantastic signing in Guimaries, and the others were decent to good upgrades on what was a poor first eleven.

It's not as easy to upgrade our starting 11 which I get, however it was clear Bruno wanted signings and better depth, he didn't get it, it has potentially cost us an outside chance at 4th. We talk about the difficulties of getting in among the established teams and being realistic, but we look like this year would be our 2nd time in which a lack of signings has seen us waste a rare opportunity to capatilise on the big 6 having poorer years.
 
The big gap is clearly below us in eighth. There is a top eight and the rest.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, man United and maybe west ham are mostly self sufficient I think.

He did but he did stuff like sell land next to St James Park to himself for £6m then flip it for £9m , Sports Direct paid just £2m over 11 years to sponsor the stadium etc.

So it wasn't as explicit as say the Roystons at Blackpool but he funnelled money into Sports Direct out of the Football club.

Liverpool have vast sponsorship and commercial income that almost rivals that of Manchester United, that helps them.
Arsenal were on the verge of being a dominant force until the Emirates went up. The expenditure there has dropped them back, and it has taken them fifteen years so far to try and get back to the Champions League.
Spurs have a new stadium. But they owe over £1bn.
Manchester United are run self sufficiently and the Glazers "take money out" while they chuck £200m at it every summer.
West Ham got a free stadium.

Did anyone see the tweet from that account that ranks food at stadiums. They posted a pizza at the Emirates that cost 20quid!
 
As Paddy says, Arsenal and Spurs have had massive investment into infrastructure and West Ham got theirs for free. Liverpool also spent fuckloads on their new stand and are doing the other stand as well.

That investment has allowed them to make more money than everyone else whilst also still being self sufficient, as the UEFA rules don’t let you not be.

Jesus I tried to look it up on their site and it doesn't even seem to be listed, instead all I could find was a download for a "platinum club brochure" - I am all for the diversification of the fans at games etc, but looking at their site reminded me off a fancy hotel or car financing service.
