The problem is recruitment

Since missing out on the playoffs on goal difference our home record is 11 13 15. The experiment with that type of football at home is a miserable failure. 46 points from 39 games. Crap

the team we had when we were promoted in L1 was far better than the team we have now i agree with that.

Imagine if dicko wasnt injured and Afobe/Sako didnt fuck off and we signed Costa . front line up of Sako Afobe Dicko Costa (would have been amazing!)

With Ikeme, Coady, Batth, Stearman and Doherty behind it...Not so amazing!

Absolutely the wrong players were brought in for the battle in the championship, I said this after all the Mendez players were coming in. Only Costa has been a real hit.

The biggest faux pas though was not recruiting in January and especially for a striker and for that I blame Lambert.

My fear now is Lambert is not as good as he thinks he his. I reckon he genuinely believed he could reach the playoffs in January with his current squad.

A lot of this could have come from his time working under Martin O'Neill who performed miracles in European football with Celtic.

Maybe Lambert needs to realise he's not good enough to get average players playing well above their ability and actually just focus
on recruiting better players and taking it from there.

We need to just scrap as many points together this season to stay up and then when the season ends there needs to be a proper review of everything, that includes Thelwell, Lambert, coaching, scouting - everything. I saw a couple of weeks ago Johnny say (even after the cup victories) that there was something fundamentally wrong at the club and he got shot down by a few people, to be fair to them they may have been blinded a bit by the impressive wins in the cup, but for me the same issues we have had for god knows how long remain.

Too many excuses are made for players, and ones that are clearly below par for where we want to be are defended as "fine" for this level when they are clearly not fit for purpose, I doubt many people expected promotion just 1 transfer window into Fosun's tenure but by the same token I doubt many would have expected us to need almost a complete overhaul again. That is in my opinion what it will take as I wouldn't care a bit if about 80% of these players never played for the club again and of the players we do have we'd still probably need 7 or 8 quality starters to compete for the top 6. That is damning on the recruitment, Marshall is a good example. Other than there already being question marks about whether he was good enough in the first place, we signed him what 3 or 4 weeks ago, he apparently is still not fit for some reason, during this time however he has been played and on another occasion brought on out of position ahead of others who can play there. What is going on? We have started handing players that are never going to be able to take us to the next level like Ikeme, Doherty and EEL long term deals. What is the point?

This isn't about one individual or one area in my opinion. A lot needs to change or we will be at best middling around in this division for a long while yet. Unfortunately I think we are stuck with Thelwell and this type of football for a while longer yet.

Huddersfield, Reading, Leeds and to an extent Wednesday (over the past couple of seasons) have shown that with good recruitment (and coaching)you can go from being a very average side to contenders over the course of a summer window.

It irks me that our foreign signings seem to make absolutely no impact for whatever reason when you see others bringing in players who hit the ground running and demonstrably improve their side.

Sako is arguably the only player we've signed from abroad in recent times to have been a success. Our forays into France otherwise have largely been an absolute disaster.

Both Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield fans thought they had a good base to work from last pre-season and said with a few key additions could make a push for the top 6. Despite the Championship not being anything special, I think we are a fair bit further away than a lot of people think.

Huddersfield are completely unrecognisable from last season which is reflected in the numbers of players they've brought in, and who've massively improved them. You've only got Tommy Smith from last season who is still nailed on at right back. Wells, Hudson and Hogg are still around the first team, but aren't first choice..

Ward, Hefele, Schindler, Lowe, Mooy, Palmer, Brown, VLP, Payne, Kachunga and Quaner have all come in and moved aside the likes of Lolley, Bunn, Whitehead etc who were mainstays of previous seasons.

I hadn't realised that they had such a big turn around in personnel but I'd also be interested in how often that kind of whole sale change in players works out well, i'd guess not often and that's what we will need. Even the players that Lambert has bought in are imo not fit for a team looking to get promoted. Weimann has been dreadful.

I'm still in the 'give PL a chance' camp. He's got to be given a transfer window and a pre-season to continue building towards a squad and a style that's his own. I don't count January windows either, the only thing they're good for is Sky Sports hype.

He obviously has to show far better form for the remainder of the season to regain confidence of a fair number of the fanbase. If he dodges relegation by the odd point is he really the way forward.

We brought in the wrong type of players for the Championship. When I suggested a group of UK based players last summer I got lashed out of it on here. Well I wasnt wrong then as it has been made abundantly clear.

Is that a fact?

This was your list as far as I can tell (as well as banging on about Leigh Griffiths constantly when there's as much chance of him playing for Wolves again as there is of Joe Hart making an emotional return to Shrewsbury):

Hendrick went to a PL club for £13m, McClean is a semi-regular for a PL team who wouldn't sell to us regardless (and it isn't wide areas that have been our problem), no chance with Griffiths, Brown wouldn't leave Celtic to play in the Championship and Gunter is shite. I'll accept Duffy is some way better than what we've got, notwithstanding that he was a total calamity for Blackburn at the start of the season.

Good well researched post

Two points about the relegation zone now. how the hell did it come to this? But no-one watching the Brighton/Newcastle game last night could be in any doubt that we are woefully short of quality. Of our squad, I'd say only Costa and Ronan are anywhere near the quality needed for a top of the table team. For me the difference was most evident in the strikers and the full backs. There's so much dross in our squad - and dross on long contracts - that I can't see Lambert being able to build a side that will challenge next year. Even a blind man must be able to see that Thelwell has failed spectacularly with the recruitment

Nail on the head there Norman

Cavaleiro will be fine, Graham proved himself last season but obviously has to show he's over his injury and if he regains his form, Iorfa with Hause showing glimpses of what he can do but I take your point, we really don't have enough quality in the squad.

Well gents, I have been saying for some time that our squad was inadequate, and that the lack of recognition of that fact and the lack of action on recruitment meant that Thelwell and Lambert were taking a massive gamble with the future of this club.

Many people on here took it for granted that we won't go down, mainly because I think, of the performances in the Cup, but as I pointed out, our performances in the league have been poor and at times, dire.

Lambert spoke today of where we need to quickly improve to take advantage of our dominance in possession, but the stat he should look at is shots taken - on target. Bham 19-2, Wigan 11-3, Newcastle 13-2. Clearly most of our shots are not even testing the opposition goalkeeper.

Interestingly, his message finishes with thoughts about next season that gives a glimpse into his relationship with Thelwell

“I don’t want to come back in the summer and we’re scrambling for players and there are people who are walking in here who I don’t know. It’s not healthy.

“We have to get ahead of the game and be smart and realise that you don’t put the club in a really bad position or get players that can’t help you.”

His talk about our 'dominance' is horseshit anyway. We don't dominate.

Our possession is Price plays it to Batth/Coady, they hook it into the channel and the opposition head it back to us, if we are lucky. For the life of me I have no idea what they work on in training. It was my same issue with Zenga, there is no pattern to our play except random hoofs forward. In this day and age, with the money they are paid, and they time they generally get to practice, it is embarrassing.

This has been the culture st Wolves for a long time. KJ nearly took us away from it and got sucked back into his and Wolges traditional values, Solbakken wanted to do the same, but it is set in stone at the club and we need sometimes big to change it.

He talks about stats but the key stat released today was that Wolves statistically were the 92 ranked club in English football for the month of February. 92 out of 92.

Would you please post a link to that? I need to punish myself...
