The Official Euro 2016 Megathread

It just doesn't sit right with me that a team that didn't manage to win a group game and hasn't won either knock out game in 90 minutes is in the last 4.

And they're so $#@!ing dull to watch.

And Ronaldo acts like a 6 year old no matter what stage of the game it is.

And.... Just.. Oh I dunno. Boooooo or something.

On a certain level I understand this but at the same time they've done what they needed to do.

They may not put on the best show but they've stopped all others from eliminating them.

If a team wins three group matches 6-0 apiece, but loses in the knockout rounds on penalties, they deserve to go home, because they didn't do enough to move on. That simple, IMHO.

Ok I'll re-word it they've won game in ET and won 1 penalty competion.

Right. They've won two games. Two knockout games, no less. And lost none. They have deserved to move on.

Yeah I've sort of worked out the rules. I know how it works. Its just shit and unjust and loads of people are fucked off with it.

Is this the referendum thread?

It's really not unjust though, is it?

It's not good to watch, and football is entertainment ultimately. Especially for those of us who are now watching every game entirely as a neutral with not even any kind of concern about who our team might face next.

They have been the same for years in knockout football.

2006: Netherlands W 1-0, England D 0-0 (won on pens), France L 0-1
2008: Germany L 2-3
2010: Spain L 0-1
2012: Czech Republic W 1-0, Spain D 0-0 (lost on pens)
2016: Croatia W 1-0, Poland D 1-1 (won on pens)

Nine games across ten years, seven of them with one or no goals. I have watched all of those matches and bar the Germany game in Euro 2008 I can confirm they were all unspeakably shite. Not just a lack of goals thing either, had Italy won 1-0 on Monday against Spain then that would still have been considered an excellent game. Portugal serve up low scoring, ultra low entertainment dirge, I cannot stand watching them.

Their behaviour in that game in 06 against Netherlands was appalling also.

Reality is the way the Euros are set out you can win it without scoring a goal, can never jump on board with 3rd place teams getting into the round of 16.
It breads negative football, teams happy to reach 4 points to guarantee qualification.

I disagree with that on principle, football is not ultimately entertainment, it is ultimately competition.

If our difference is that core perception then I doubt we'll ever see eye-to-eye on it.

The battle of Nuremberg. One of my favourite football matches of all time, despite the actual lack of football played by either side.

Leaked Belgium XI
Courtois - Meunier, Alderweireld, Denayer, J.Lukaku - Witsel, Nainggolan - Carrasco, De Bruyne, Hazard -R.Lukaku.

I think we can get at that defence, but bloody hell keeping them out at the other end is going to be challenging.

Very excited more in hope than expectation. Bit like playing England at rugby for most of my adult life!

I'd love Wales to do this but they're going to have to play a LOT better than they did on Saturday.

It's a big ask to beat this Belgian side. Let's just hope it's a decent game.

Wales need Allen to continue his excellent form. Those wing backs worry me.

It's pelting down in Lille. My experience of Wales suggests this should suit the boys in red...

Wales' anthem is so much better than GSTQ.
