When they previewed this the other day on the BBC breakfast programme, the prick of a presenter (don`t know his name), described the Beatles as being a boy band.

Applying the general definition of being either in their teens or early twenties when they formed would make them one I guess.
 
A popular all male group with loads of screaming female fans and number one singles? Technically, you could say The Beatles were a sort of boy band when they started. Although, I think only George was still in his teens when they hit the charts.
 
I've always considered 'Boy Bands' (and girl bands) to be 'manufactured' although I've no real idea what the parameters are, if any.
 
For me if they genuinely play instruments they aren't a boy/girl band. BSB are the biggest selling in America, Take That here
