The F1 Thread

Watching the end of the race and no one can overtake. It really is pants these days.

Maybe it's time to revive this thread for 3 weeks so we can talk about at least one English victory over an Australian.

Can't decide if I'll get up for the race at 4am tomorrow yet though, brutal start time for November (I mind it less in March/April)

Maybe not.

Was pulling my hair out that the commentators didn't realise how important 4th over 5th was for the championship until Karun popped in for the last two laps. Pleased for Norris to limit the damage, but I hope he gets to win it from the front next week. Expecting more drama to come, we all know Max.

Can’t understand why Verstappen didn’t hold back and engage with Norris as it was the only way of him winning the title. Norris has basically had a clear path to the title.

The practice race starts today were interesting.
The cars with the Ferrari engines were rapid, especially in the 2nd phase. In one, Lewis went from around 9th to 1st by the first corner.
One earlier he sat behind Russell and left him for dead.

No idea on their race pace but they have installed a rocket for the starts.

From reading up a bit it seems like they pre-empted starts being tricky this season and designed the car/engine around it to make the most of it. Other didn’t and are now complaining it’s ’not safe’ to try and get the rules changed to help them.

Ferrari seem to have a couple of innovative ideas as well - rear wing that effectively goes upside down rather than just opening like the others, and an extra ‘wing’ around the exhaust.

I’m sure they’ll still be 11th/13th in Melbourne!

They will be on Plan E by lap 6.

The Merc engine looks like it will be banned from August. Standard Red Bull behaviour on that as well as they had a similar idea but couldn't get it to work as well as they hoped so joined Ferrari etc in the complaining about it and asking for it to be banned.

It always makes me laugh about F1. They all push for the most innovative solutions and as soon as anyone manages to get an advantage the rest just kick off to get it banned unless they can copy it easily.

I really REALLY hope the Ferrari is competitive with the McLaren Merc and Red Bull all season. The sport needs the jeopardy of the top teams properly slugging it out rather than a procession in races.

My thought is that Ferrari don't think overtaking is going to be as easy as most are envisaging under the new regs so have built a start rocket to get ahead and then make the car as tough to overtake as possible. Merc with their part that Red Bull don't like sound as if they are going down the consistent higher speed long race stints route, but all the charging and depletion elements may affect that strategy.

It's beginning to look like it might be pretty interesting and I can't wait for Albert Park in a couple of weeks. Wish I was going.

Last year Ferrari identified a potential turbo issue on the starts under the new regs. Dont get the start right and it could take up to 10 seconds for it to kick in. They raised this and said it could cause safety issues and the way races are started should be changed to counter it but the other teams told them to shut up as they were talking bollocks.
As Carrot said above, they went off and developed an engine to cope with it.

Other teams now realise they fucked up and asked for the start procedure to change for safety reasons.....Ferrari have a voting veto though and have used it.

So this should be an issue that gives them a distinct advantage in the early season races like the double diffuser on the Brawn that turned Button into a world champion. Presumably the other teams will be working like busy bees to develop the same thing by about Monaco.

Merc should get an advantage with their engine compression smart dodge of the rules. That will remain until the mid season break.
