Was that the one where Nixon and Mal Loye were picked? Schofield and Kirtley played test cricket despite never being good enough.

Darren Maddy was one of those all rounders that never quite seemed to fulfil their potential in the era when we were still looking for the new Botham.
Cork, DeFreitus (sp?), Chris Lewis, David Capel etc. None of them were real failures but none were quite good enough at one thing or another and I don't think it helped than they never seemed to play for fashionable counties. We followed that era with the obsession that we still have [until very recently] of picking all rounder keepers instead of the best gloveman available

That was the ODIs after the 2006/07 Ashes which we do not speak of.

Nixon played at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean too.

I'd argue that Cork and De Freitas in their pomp were good enough as bowlers. I agree with the general point though.

Tbf Maddy was in as an opener in Test cricket, his bowling was neither here nor there.

Cork and Daffy had their moments, the former was a bit Woakes-like (but not as good) in that he was valuable at home but fairly pointless overseas.

Ironically though Maddy's record was better bowling than batting in the limited international cricket he played.

I nearly put an asterix by Cork and Daffy as they got the new Botham tag when really they were bowlers who batted a bit. Probably harsh to say they were good at neither, but they definitely didn't reach the heights they'd been hyped to do (says someone with no FC cricket experience or record at all. And not a stellar one at club level either!)

I remember reading one of the many Botham biographies many years ago and can't remember who said it [Boycott maybe] that although Botham was a bowling all rounder, his batting technique was very, very good and if he had applied himself slightly more as a batsman then he could have been a very effective top order bat as well. Instead he saw himself as a bowler who gave the ball a bit of a biff with the bat.
