The can we beat the record(?) Crystal Palace v Wolves 22/2 Build up and match thread.

Yep, ‘78, what World cup that was and what a team Peru had. They took a very good (by their standards) Scotland apart and embarrassed them.

Teofilo Cubillas scored two but his first was a phenomenal free kick. Cubillas and Peru owned the sash kits from then on, with everyone else still playing catch up:

Especially as Ally's Army were going to win the lot

Loved that World Cup, first one I properly remember and to this day the most into. Crackly commentary on the satellite link up, ticker tape, Kempes, Ardilles and so on. Hell of a Dutch team too getting beaten in the final (again).

Ticking a lifetime box and will be at the Estadio Monumental on Thursday to see River Plate take on Banfield in the Primera Division. Can’t bloody wait and River even have the red sash on white kit too so maybe it was meant to be.

Guatemala have just recently had what might be my favorite national kit(s) ever:

Umbro just don't miss.

Sash kits always bring this to mind for me...

Didn’t David burnside play father stone Father Stone in Father Ted?IMG_3685.jpeg

By my maths the earliest we can be relegated officially is a week Wednesday if we lose to Palace, Villa and Liverpool and Forest win all 3 between now and then.
Plus the others above pick up a few points too ideally I’d like us to push out until April really isn’t a lot to ask.
Think it’ll be confirmed on the 11th April at West Ham by Nuno.

And Fulham get a point, Brighton get 4, Leeds 5 and Spurs 6. Kind of irrelevant anyway, really it happened after we lost to Burnley.

I had £25 on Holland @12-1. Never liked Argentina since...

Wasn’t it on on a Sunday evening. IIRC the game was delayed because of a plaster cast on a Dutch players arm that the Argentinians weren’t happy about. I could be wrong as I was only 6 🤣.

Yes, was a Sunday evening. Google says 7pm ko.

We’ll all have world cups we reminisce fondly about for all sorts of reasons but that one had it all. Ally’s army cocking up it up against Iran, Peru and the aforementioned Cubillas taking them apart also before the Holland game and that Gemmill goal. The shenanigans of Argentina delaying ko of their last group game til after Brazil had played theirs, meaning they knew they had to win 4-0, with the superb Peru team miraculously folding to Argentina in a 6-0 defeat.

The Argentinians eventually going on to beat the fantastic Dutch side in the final. All against a back drop of exotic locations, ticker tape, goals pinging in all over the place and the political sensitivity of the military junta.

Not forgetting Arie Haan of course who hit two of the cleanest strikes you could wish to see from distance, and against Sepp Maier and Dino Zoff too no less. Maier never got a sniff of the first and the 40 yarder from Haan was still climbing as it hit the net.

A good review. The only bit you missed was it saw the introduction of the Adidas Tango ball. Prior to that footballs were just footballs.

Good knowledge, didn’t know that about the Tango but googling it is interesting. The two previous tournaments used the adidas Telstar then Telstar Durlast (sounds like a condom that one), but Tango was the first of the modern balls as we know them, much less water absorption and so on. Wasn’t just a beach ball either, as Cubillas and Haan showed, went straight as a bullet too.

That Arie Haan goal is up there with Carlos Alberto for my favourite world cup goal.

I six so I was sent to get some sleep after lunch and dad got me up before kick off was due. With the delays and then extra time six year old me probably needed that afternoon kip.
