Summer 2022 Transfer Window

The only interesting thing that we don’t know is how they’ll react when we’re in the bottom 5/6.

Everything else is bare minimum spend while staying in the league. They’ll be delighted if we stay up after getting rid of a few extra players and not adding anyone this summer.

I never will understand this as a measure of a players ability.

For example, what other clubs were in for Jonny, Moutinho or Rui Patricio when we signed them as a newly promoted club? Were/are they shit?

How many other clubs had their agent basically pushing the player to a single team? Not really an exact comparison.

Because it would be one dimensional and end up being more negative than we are currently.
Don't think that's true. We would have more width from the full backs and one more attacking midfielder/ 10.

The extra midfielder could drop into the centre of defence if pressured.

The only reason we play 5 at the back is because Coady can't defend in a pair.

City, Liverpool, Utd, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Wham, Newcastle, Villa, Everton and Leicester all in recent years

That's half the league.

And we spent €40 as recently as two seasons ago on a player not yet ready for a first team gig.

Leicester and Everton sold star players for big money around the time they spend those fees.

That attacking midfielder would need to be unbelievably creative as palhinha would offer nothing in terms of ball progression. I agree that we only play a 5 is because we don't have 2 centrebacks that are good enough as a pair but the fact our midfield currently has no one who can carry the ball is a big reason why we end up going side to side so often.

What are you basing that on? How many times have you seen Palhinha play?

Everton? Bought Richarlison the year they sold Davy Klasson?

Regardless we don't need to rely on transfer spend as there has been a huge TV deal done which guarantees more money this season.

Surviving on transfer revenue is a nonsense strategy.

Well a ball carrying 8/10 would do that job, particularly when we have one of the most accurate progressive passers in the world.

You’ve lost me a bit here @WsWolf

You say playing them together will be too one dimensional, but then you are saying only one of them can progress the ball? Surely that isn’t one dimensional? Unless you are saying Neves can’t progress the ball!?

Even if they were one dimensional, that’s pretty much what you are asking for in a double pivot. Two players able to do the same job on opposite sides of the pitch. Which allows 6 other outfield players to do more with the ball.

I'm saying that the job Palhinha would be doing is what Neves does anyway, I don't feel as though you'd need both in the same pair. You would be better with one of them and someone who's more box to box and able to carry the ball, which is something neither of them do well.

Why would you need that in a 4231?

Neves can carry the ball, we just don't really ask him to. He did it more often in the Championship in games where he and Saiss were a midfield 2. He's not going to be doing 1,2s on the edge of the box and break beyond the forwards, but he can carry the ball if that's what you want him to do

Because that's what I prefer based on the other players we have. We'd end up being in the position we are now, where teams sit off us knowing that our current midfield aren't going to be direct or run at them.

You don’t think RAN, MGW, Neto, Podence, Adama, Chiquinho can run at people?

If we played a back 5 in the way we have done you may have a point but still wouldn’t see an issue with Neves and Palhinha in a 343 if we actually played it properly. I also would assume it’s highly unlikely we play a back 5 again unless we don’t actually sign anyone and Bruno feels he has to.

Well, Jonny, Boly, Dendoncker and Traore all joined us that summer (either on loan or permanently) didn't have Mendes as their agent (in Traore's case at the time, he moved to Gestifute latterly), so maybe it's just those 4 who are shit then? No one else was in for them after all.

I doubt other clubs would have been deterred by Mendes to look at Jota, Raul, Moutinho, Patricio either, maybe they just thought they were shit.

But you miss the point, if players are only as good as the clubs they are linked with or signed for then no decent players would ever play for a lower league team...........ever!

Clubs unearthing hidden/semi hidden gems just doesn't happen in your experience of football then? How depressing.

It’s unsustainable if you want to stay in the Premier League and will catch up with you eventually.
If it’s another bad window followed by a poor start expect the discontent and open revolt from the fan base towards the board.
Board has completely lost sight of what’s most important at a football club.
Only way you can make profit out of a football club is to stay in the PL for as long as possible on a smallest of budget possible.
