Relegation Thread 2023/24

When your bank account drains faster than you can replenish it and when you see some of the money you previously spent wasted, you'd tend to think about what you are doing and why.
He spent fortunes and years on trying to get us to the Prem.

Then we got there and at that critical point decided to pull the financial plug, ridiculous logic.

Surely you remember the 'Golden tit', he'd had enough of bank rolling the club with little to show for it.

I think his son was being an arse as well so probably thought a few different people were taking advantage of him.

Certainly in the early 2000s it would have been more common for an expensively assembled Championship squad to be largely fit for purpose at the level above, not that they'd nearly all be too old/not good enough.

That is on Jones and his recruitment, ignore anything he says about promised funds or an alternative longer term plan involving younger players because he is and always was full of shit.

Of course I remember it, I just don't and never did understand his flip flopping.

Different time frame

Says a man who doesn't know the full story.

That said I do think he'd have been given a bigger budget if we'd gone up in 2002 rather than 2003.

And also it's on the club - if you don't have faith in Jones after he presided over that collapse then sack him (he also could have easily gone due to form in the first half of 02/03), and we should have had someone in place telling him 'no, you can't sign yet another player for big money who will be worth £0 in a couple of years'.

I am almost 71, so the old memory might be rusty, but i believe it was his son who fucked it all up.

Jonathan Hayward was gone by 1997.

From what I understand the relationship between Jack & Jon was poor even after Jon left Wolves.

I seem to remember john accusing jack of squandering the family fortune, but for reasons previously mentioned i'm not 100% sure. Bit of a messy scrap at the time i think.

I didn't think that the ineptitude of this season's promotees would lead to such wistful reminiscience. 🥲

I've told you before. Don't put £2 in the "Dan talks about the 90s/00s" jukebox.

Revolving carousel of chinless wonders

I think it was Rick rather than Rupert that we had around the time of the promotion

It was Sir Jack alone from 1997 until he put the club up for sale in late 2003 (months after we went up), with first Richards then Moxey (from 2000) as CEO.

Rugger Rick was late 2003 to summer 2006 (when Hoddle left), then Jez essentially ran it on his own with a theoretical nod from above from a very old SJH until Morgan bought us.

My pal Rupert was a short-lived director as we were getting sold.
