There's a good, passing team with some limited flair and creativity to be made out of our squad, notwithstanding injuries, but Jackett seems determined to make not losing a bigger priority than actively taking a risk to try and win. Clearly doesn't trust his defenders to cope without active shielding from midfield, and I can't really blame him, but the fact that we have such unappealing choices back there to choose from is mostly down to him, I'd say. (I also think a big part of the reason the defence looks so bad is its inability to play out the back, inviting pressure onto itself by hoofing it downfield, and that's a tactical choice the manager has mistakenly made IMO.)
That ten minutes or so in the second half today where we looked like we'd score reminded me a lot of the way the team played in League 1, which shouldn't be surprising considering the players we had out there. Far too cautious not making a more aggressive sub - Coady should've come off and either Bright or Byrne should've come on, we've should've gone straight 4-4-2, and really gone for it. Saville didn't have much time to impress, and it's going to be interesting to see if he's who Jackett sees as backup to Edwards (and, if so, does that mean he's going to get a run of games as number 10 if Edwards' injury is serious?)
RVLP man of the match, easily - all the best of his technique today, even if he still can't really shoot. Mentioned in the matchday thread that it's a shame we're not going to be able to see a three of Graham - Zyro - RVLP behind Afobe now, because I think on form that'd be a really exciting, creative front four. As it is I think we might not end up with anyone coming in, in which case I have no idea what Jackett's going to do, especially if Edwards is injured. Zyro on the left and Saville behind Siggy? Maybe Coady alongside Price and McDonald pushed up to number 10?
