Overrated players

I can understand someone like weah, who was considered almost on par with pele and maradonna at the time, but cavani never got the credit he deserved.
I also disagree with players like lampard, yes they were super hyped but they were the best in their position in the league. Its like saying messi and ronaldo are overrated becaused theyre so hyped up- theyre the best.

Personally I always thought players like walcott, john stones, phil jones, barkley, pickford, eric dier, delli alli and lingaard were overrated... promising english youngsters with huge contracts hyped to death by media that are simply inconsistant or still promising youngsters in their mid 20s

John Stones is a great shout, never looked a particularly good defender and think the 'ball player' tag often goes to his head leading him to do stuff that's either beyond him or just plain stupid.
 
I think Stones was overrated. Everyone bar Youngie have seen him for what he is now
 
There's still a very good player in Stones, but the constant injuries are a concern as he always looks very rusty off a break. He's not someone who's going to lead a defence though.
 
I've never, ever seen Karim Benzama have a good game. He always looks like a fucking carthorse to me. 309 goals in 642 games but he's always just looked shit

I can get on board with that.

Di Maria was another at Real that always left me cold, think his stock dropped significantly when he bombed at United though so probably doesn't really count any more.
 
Tim Cahill, Steven Naismith and Morten Gamst Pederson. 3 MOTD players. used to pop up with the odd goal. Not very good in general play.

Cavani suffered from the same thing in England as Zlatan did to an extent. In their younger years they were only seen at world cups of when their team played an English team in the CL.

I remember watching Cavani at a WC and thinking he was terrible and didn’t understand the hype. Seen him be a lot better at PSG and more recently for Uruguay too.

Zlatan never scored or played well against English opposition so was never given much credit. Then he scored 4 goals for Sweden against us and smashed it at PSG followed by a decent spell at Utd so got the credit he deserved.

Yes, he's a bit of a twat, but he was the best in the world in his position for about a decade.
 
I was never impressed with Alves until he left Barca to be fair. Whenever I saw him play for them he basically just offered a lot of legs up and down the right hand side but the quality of his delivery was generally appalling, Dave Edwards could've replaced him on most of those viewings.

He went up dramatically in my estimations at Juve though, did he play against Barca for them one year and completely take Neymar out of the game I think?

You've more or less named all of the same players I was going to. I'd add Gary Cahill and Adam Lallana to the list.

This pretty much sums up what I think as well. At Barca he was very hyped up especially for his attacking play but most of the time all I saw him do was sky free-kicks and fall over. Crap at the 2014 World Cup also, got dropped for Maicon mid-way.

Seemed a lot better at Juve.
