Former Newcastle, Manchester City and England manager too!

Saints had a retro version of that Keegan kit a couple of years back too
 
It's not very nice though is it, Blues had a similar one, they look shit.

He was a fantastic player, a grafter who got every last drop out of the talent he was blessed with. Went to play in Germany at his peak, learned the language embraced the culture and won European player of the year twice whilst there. All this at a time most players were eating steak and chips and only time they went abroad was for two weeks on the piss close season in Torremolinos.

And if that’s not enough he was good at falling off racing bikes, loved his aftershave, had the best perm in football, the voice of an angel and was a Top 40 single selling megastar.

Years ahead of his time. Special K. What a guy.
 
When I lived in Hamburg in 2001/02 they still loved him. As HSV do, they sacked their manager in September and they were desperate for him to join. But he'd only just started at Man City (in the Championship, but was evident they were going to stick a bit of money behind it) so no chance.

For someone who isn't a natural linguist and who left Germany decades ago, his German isn't bad at all.


Lovely guy, wasn't tactically up to the England job but he admitted as much and bailed when it was obvious that it wouldn't work.

Yes, it’s a shame he seems to be judged solely on his failings as an England manager. He was a hell of a player and to do what he did in Germany (on and off the pitch) is amazing, especially in 1977!

European footballer of the year - twice! No English player has come close even once, never mind twice in the intervening 40+ years. I jest about the singing etc of course, but his achievements were amazing and for reasons that must stretch beyond the England failings he just never seems to get the credit he deserves.

I never held England against him. He stepped in when there wasn't really anyone else after we dumped Hoddle (for off field stuff, but the football was shit anyway) and never originally wanted to take it permanently. Everyone got carried away when he won a couple early on and he actually tried attacking, unlike his predecessor and so he did take it.

Euro 2000 was dreadful and he made mistakes, he had the bottle to say he couldn't do it once we lost to Germany afterwards in the qualifiers and it was best to go now while there were plenty of games left. Loads of respect for that.

He was a good manager, just limited and of his time. His Newcastle teams were brilliant, I genuinely looked forward to watching them as a neutral.

Fair enough, that’s me told, they’ll show some Liverpool goals, mention Germany, maybe mention him getting smacked around the head by a baseball bat while asleep in his Range Rover, then cut to what to show the who he was as a person?

Keegan scored the best goal I've ever seen and it was against us at Anfield!
I think Clemence bowled the ball out to Heighway on the touch line middle of their half.
He ran about 50 yards into the middle of our half, still on the touchline, stroked a lovely ball diagonally into the heart of our defense where Keegan ran onto it and around the edge of the D on the penalty area Keegan met it and smashed it past Phil Parkes.
From Clemence to the back of out net took about 12 seconds.
I just stood there marvelling and clapped. Wow!
