Live Match Discussion 2025/26

Watching Ipswich vs Boro, the latter have been top six all season and have some painfully average players: Luke Ayling, Matt Targett, Alan Browne, Tommy Conway, and they also have an absolutely shite keeper.

Does give me some vague hope that we should be at least vaguely competitive unless we really mess up, you don't have to be very good.
Look at Southampton too - awful last season but as soon as they got a competent manager they've zoomed up the table. Only Leicester have struggled and they're so badly run they make us look like Brentford.

I just think there’s too much to untangle. We’ve been so bad for several years now. That’s before I even think about how we shift these players and trust our recruitment team. You are basically relying us on us having a top class head coach and we know we don’t have that

Don't think they need to be top class tbh. Just good enough.

Some would say that this is the exact line of thinking that got us here.
I think both things are true. Contextually you don't have to be particularly good to finish 4th from bottom in the PL nor make the play offs at worse in the Championship. It's when your aspiration is to not be particularly good that you've got an issue.

I still can't get on board with the idea that we've been handicapped to this degree on purpose.

Depends what you mean by on purpose. Shi, Vitor and his mate didn't deliberately sign shit players. There's plenty of evidence that the aspiration for at least the last 3 seasons has been to finish lower mid table though and with the promoted sides all going down 2 years in a row there was definitely a complacency there.

Sometimes things just don’t go to plan. Newcastle have spent a fortune on Elanga, Woltemade, Ramsey and Wissa. These have all demonstrated to be good players it just hasn’t worked (yet). Jackson Tchatchoua has never demonstrated to be a good player, how has anyone watched him for more than 30 seconds and then not just walked straight out the ground and moved on to someone else?

Tolu Arokadare has had one decent season in a league renown for over inflating strikers abilities. His YouTube video doesn’t even make him look good, just scoring from an average distance of 4 yards. How have we then sanctioned a ridiculous amount of money on him to then sit on the bench behind someone who didn’t care?

Fer Lopez had played a handful of games of senior football yet we spent a wedge on him and hoped he’d then succeed straight away in a foreign, tough and more physical league.

These haven’t just “not worked out”, they were bad from the start and I’m not sure how they passed any form of scout report.

How we mismanaged MGW the only player to come through our Academy in the last decade (Mane tbc and doesn't really count anyway) was criminal.
Lage refusing to bring him back in January 2022 was just insane. We can't score for toffee and we're letting Adama go (which again, is ridiculous given we get no financial recompense for it), he's our player you Trigger looking wanker, get him back here.

Hugo Bueno is Academy, although I think he is shit.

Oh and we used the MGW money on Guedes. Awful, awful, awful footballer, the most obviously shit signing since Robert Taylor.
