1986 - all the press wanted the manager pilloried and lineker dropped before England played Poland in the final group game.

Lineker then won the golden boot and I think there is a good chance that the winner of that England v Argentina game would have won the lot, whichever side it was (although I will concede there was a very decent West Germany side that made the final on the other side of the draw). I am convinced England would have made fairly short work of Belgium just like Argentina did.

What in God’s name do they find to question!?

England main goal scoring threat has always had flack, Lineker- Shearer-Rooney-Kane. We see it on here that people say they hate him because how he is always in refs ear and is good at the dark arts, personally that’s just sanctimonious BS.
Fans don’t like him because he’s often be good against their club.
Reality is he’s one of the best players England have produced and people will appreciate him more when his retired. He comes across as thoroughly decent bloke and never gets into trouble outside of football and an absolute professional in his commitment to his sport.
If people don’t like his dark arts and being in refs ear that’s 100% the officials problem.

Except he hasn't against Wolves by his standards 4 in 9 in the PL and I dislike him for all those "sanctimonious" reasons, just as I do Fernandes. You can dislike him whilst still recognising his ability.

As for England he'll be our top scorer probably for ever and you can't argue with his record, but the criticism he got in the last Euros was warranted, If he was anybody else he'd have been deservedly dropped and we instantly looked a better side when he was taken off in the final.

Oh and to add, he killed any chance Nuno had at Spurs by setting the blueprint for Strand Larsen and simply not trying whilst he sulked. Even Spurs fans will tell you about the none trying part.

I admit to underplaying his ability due to disliking him for the sanctimonious reasons too, plus always found him boring (not that, that should count towards anything)

Never been one to dislike a player if they score against us, I always respected Kevin Phillips for example.

Since he left the country I've definitely found more respect for him, probably because I can just see the numbers without the antics.

Find the hate for him on this forum and wider social media quite unusual, if he hadn't come from and in England only played for Tottenham I wonder if it would be the same. Yes he was bad at Euro 24, so were most of our big players, but that wasn't from not trying and he was always professional about it even when subbed off, plenty of strikers would have have kicked up a fuss - Mbappe, Lewandowski, Ronaldo all very problematic for their countries in different ways during that tournament. Rare in today's game to see players as committed to performing in international football as he is. Disagree that he sabotaged Nuno, those were problems of his own making. Tottenham fans I know understood where he came from and blame Levy for not supporting him and the team. Kane comes across as a pretty bland family man and a dedicated professional, to me that's very inoffensive.

So you're okay with him recklessly endangering his fellow professionals with his consistent foul play?

He was constantly backing into defenders to win fouls until it was highlighted on MOTD how he was endangering players by his actions. I suspect a fair few Wolves fans also didn’t warm to him after he was booked for diving in the league game at Wembley in the same season he sprinted back to hack Traore down.

Football would be bland without irrational likes and dislikes so long may they continue.

Have I memory-holed some truly criminal challenge Kane put in once? Definitely a master of the “tactical foul” but so is Moutinho. I can’t think of him being consistently more reckless than any other physical forward.

For me, any dislike was spillover from just how tense playing against him is/was. He could be anonymous for 89:58’ and then in the other two seconds of the match score two worldies. My blood sugar hated him for sure.

Tactical fouling is not tipping players over while in midair, its dangerous and the fact that he was allowed to get away with it for so long reflects very poorly on the standard of officiating here.
