Keir Starmer at it again..

Giving people more money to spend (pay less tax) and that'll grow the economy. Raise interest rates slightly to keep a grip on inflation.

A growing economy will generate more income in tax then a stalled one, and an uptick in inflation reduces the amount of debt the country has.

Sorted

(I'm not being entirely serious)

There is a theory that they floated tax rises which caused a fall in the borrowing costs that the OBR used in their forecasts, and now that those forecasts are set they've reversed the decision as the headroom will look more favourable, even though it actually won't be. Proper responsible stuff
Therein lies the problem with obsessing with the OBR. Trying to set long term objectives based on short term changes in forecasts is ridiculous.

Starmer needs to wake up to the fact that a lot of the criticism he’ll get for many of the sensible proposals above will come from people that never have and never will vote labour. He needs to start trying to keep those that did vote for him on board and his apparent wish to please everybody is doing the exact opposite. Lose the voters that trusted you to make some changes that would rebalance things, and see the very wealthy pay a bit more, and it’s game over. Maybe he should look at Maggie T, I didn’t agree with most things she did (any?!) but she had conviction in her policies and delivered what the people who voted for her wanted and didn’t give a toss what those that didn’t vote for her thought.

I suppose they’ve come to the conclusion a soft line on immigration is akin to flogging a dead horse so they’ll leave that futility to the greens and try and pitch themselves as a credible version of Reform.

They have completely confused asylum/refugees in this, the much smaller part of illegal and legal parts of our immigrant figures. But kudos, you've just attacked the most vulnerable, well done Labour 👏🏻

No way will the Labour Party universally get behind this.

Literally no reason to vote for them now.

Fear of the alternative is all they have to offer. For lessons on how effective that is nowadays, see Kamala Harris.

This is a crisis of our own making and the consequence of being an island nation in an increasingly politically disconnected world. This is a solution to appease not solve.

Issues with the level of migration, illegal or legal, regular or irregular, is an international issue that requires an international solution. Any individual state that wishes to "deal with" immigration can only do so in a limited way, and to push that further requires measures that will have have an ever decreasing impact the further they are pushed.

We got good at stopping people coming in on the back of lorries and instead, a new route in was found. We didn't solve anything, just changed it.

We have very few means by which people can claim asylum in this country until they set foot on this country's land. Coming in by air is nearly impossible, road/tunnel/rail significantly curtailed so in the absence of matter transportation, we provide no other options...and then get angry when people use the only option.

I could say the public are being conned into believing that all their ills are caused by immigrants, but for many, they don't care about the truth, they don't care about a realistic and workable solution...it is just a vehicle for their racism. And Labour are just feeding the trolls.
