I don't think he'll be here that long anyway even if he signs a new contract. Stick a 50m release clause in there and it motivates him to play well enough for someone to meet it. I wouldn't be overly bothered if we got that for him and then spent the money in defence/midfield.

Maybe, there will be obvious times when players regress or just lose form but it's unlikely there are many on that money who are completely undeserving of it, the I'd case like Hudson Odoi etc.

Obviously I don't know how it works but if I knew one of my colleagues had a large payrise and I thought I was more valuable I'd be asking for it to be looked at or reassessing my options. Why wouldn't Neves and even Neto do the same now? Imagine we'll be up to 150-200k territory when the latter comes to renew.

That’s what I’d have guessed at tbh. Probably about right given the fee but lack of immediate impact.
