Euro 2016 watch

He's playing very well, but none of Milner, Delph or Henderson will be dropped if fit, Wilshere will go if he comes back, add in Alli and Dier who should be going too and there is no room in that area for another CM.

Fascinating paper. Especially the point about the French being automatically parachuted into group A.

Just watch Group E get drawn as England, Italy, Sweden, Wales...

If I was naming the 30 man training squad tomorrow, fitness permitting, I'd choose the following:

Hart, Butland, Forster (3)

Clyne, Walker, Stones, Smalling, Jagielka, Cahill, Jones, Baines, Shaw (9)

Dier, Alli, Barkley, Henderson, Wilshere, Drinkwater, Delph, Carrick (8)

Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Lallana (4)

Kane, Rooney, Sturridge, Walcott, Vardy, Welbeck (6)

If I was to then cut 7 from that, it would probably be:

Walker
2 from Jagielka, Cahill and Jones
Carrick
Delph - unless he starts regularly and performs well for City
Sturridge (Guaranteed to be injured)
Shootout between Lallana and Welbeck

Then line up something like this:

Hart, Butland, Forster

Clyne, Stones, Cahill, Smalling, Bertrand, Shaw

Dier, Alli, Barkley, Wilshere, Carrick, Milner

Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Lallana

Kane, Rooney, Vardy, Welbeck

That's my 23 as it stands.

You'd take Shaw and Welbeck, despite both missing most/all of the season? Big shout.

Of all the injury risks I'd probably take Sturridge (if he has regained fitness at that point) because of the impact he can have. With Shaw & Welbeck we already have other players who can perform well enough in their roles.

Starting 11 for me would be different to a few above, as well. I'd go -

----------------Kane--------------------
Sterling------Barkley----------Walcott
-----------Alli-----------Dier-----------
Bertrand---Smalling---Stones---Clyne
----------------Butland-----------------

A bench containing the likes of Rooney, Baines, Wilshere, Cahill, Ox & Vardy is a strong place to be.

Welbz should play at least some football by the spring. I'm no massive fan of him as a footballer but he rarely lets England down. Shaw is too good to leave out if he's available and I don't like Baines or Gibbs at international level (and no fucking way am I ever picking Danny Rose).

You just can't back Sturridge to get through a tournament. He'd play two games and break.

Butland over Joe Hart, really? I don't have it even close between the two.

Shaw should be back in March. He's a top class defender.

Not sure I'd fancy taking butland personally. tells the story of how poor we are goalkeeper wise at the moment.

I dunno, Hart and Forster are an excellent pair. Hart's the one player we have with a bona fide claim at being one of the top five in Europe in his position (others may develop into that later). Not many countries with two keepers that good, France's number two is Mandanda for example and he is awful. Butland has had a good season but I would have him as number three. You never end up using the third keeper anyway, you could take Stuart Taylor for all the difference it'd make.

Butland has been brilliant this season. Very harsh if you're dropping him for a McCarthy/Heaton. He was poor for a few seasons but has improved drastically since taking the #1 spot.

Butland, Hart and Forster would be a great three IMO!

My squad as it stands:

Hart, Butland, Forster/Heaton (fitness permitting)

Clyne, Stones, Jones, Smalling, Cahill, Bertand, Baines/Shaw (again, fitness permitting)

Carrick, Dier, Barkley, Alli, Henderson, Sterling, Ox, Lallana, Milner/Wilshere (again, fitness permitting)

Rooney, Kane, Vardy, Sturridge/Welbeck

Team:

Hart

Clyne
Stones
Smalling
Bertrand/Shaw

Dier
Wilshere/Ox
Barkley

Rooney
Kane
Sterling

I've left Henderson out of my squad but he'll obviously go despite his total of 0 good games for England.

Astounding shout. Butland has been absolutely phenomenal this season.

Is Alex McCarthy at Palace injured, I thought he would be the break through keeper this season, not Butland.

Started the season well, chucked a couple in and Wayne has been impressive since to be fair to him.

Wayne Hennessey surprises me I was always waiting for a goalkeeping clanger, could never trust him.

All set for UEFA making their usual faff of a draw. Should take five minutes tops but watch them unnecessarily complicate it.
