It was a stupid lunging challenge, but i'm not sure he actually made contact? Which if he didn't back then wouldn't have meant a booking?

I think it was mentioned in commentary that the reaction of the German bench forced the referee to act as he didn't originally reach for his card.
The tackle by Brehme on Gascoigne on the other hand was a cynical one which may have a ref reaching for his red card today.

Häßler made the very most of the tackle on him by Pearce which led to the goal too. Still a foul though.
