Brentford 2-2 Wolves - Verdict Thread (16/03/26)

I think Bentz will go.

We are probably going to be stuck with PTJ, so no need for him. We will put the 14 year old in his place

God, he does seem like he’d drive one of these:

Has another year i think but I can't see him sticking around to be back up in the Champ.

Will go for some 1st team playing time or do what he is doing now in the Prem.

I also don’t agree he’s setting us up to be negative. The plan is the same it’s been for a while now, try and get Bellegarde and Mane on the ball behind their midfielders. Sadly Mane was poor/not that good (delete as appropriate) and Bellegarde isn’t that good. Then after that it’s try and release Jackson and Hugo. The former can’t cross and the later rarely tries, and even if they do there’s limited options in the box.

So for me I’d be looking to get an extra body forward by playing a back 4, and as last night proved, having an extra body in their made no difference.

I also think one of our better attacking performances was palace where Armstrong was dropping off and picking it up in the pockets. So i’d be looking to repeat that in some way, whether it would be 532 or a 4231 if we wanted to be braver.

Well, his style of play might be 442 wingers, but we don’t have any so he’s doing what he feels is the best with what he has available.

I feel any attacking option is limited with the players available, but I prefer that given we’re going down and aren’t setting an embarrassing record, we have some freedom play with some kind of back four now which surely is what we’re more likely to set up with next year.

We're months in and I'm still none the wiser as to what Handsome Rob's style of play is or what he wants us to do.

He's instilled a good deal more fight but that's about it.
While he’s looking at the legendary bad hand he chose to pick up, he’s now got a mini break and zero pressure to produce something of note in the last few games. Obviously if it was me I’d be potting him if there is no sign of a plan then. But I understand formal procedure is to wait until late November.

I hate parsing this out. So often it gets talked about as if the team under pressure just isn’t trying or doesn’t want to attack (which, if ever true, should result in wiping out the coaching staff), but equally I don’t know what you would point to to properly decide “we were shit” or “they were good”. Other than the “eye test”, which is as subjective as it gets.

@YoungWolf would this be something you’ve heard coaches discuss before?
Erm, I’d say too often coaches use the “they wanted it more than us” line. That kinda stuff gets bandied around too often. There’s definitely times where this lot haven’t tried mind…

Brentford weren’t good though last night. At pretty much any point. We were very poor from 15 minutes in until Armstrong’s goal. Like laughably bad at times.

As others have said, I’m not really sure what his “style” but I put a large part of that down to the lack of quality in this squad. We’re a bit more organised defensively I guess

I think fitness is much improved also since RE came in, the more I hear about how VP conducted pre season is a disgrace and sounds amateurish. I think he’s bought back a degree of professionalism to the squad.

I don’t mind coaches throwing that type of shit to the press, but if that’s also the internal message…

The remit when we hired him was to install some pride and save us from the embarrassment of where we were headed. He’s achieved that.

What style of play do teams with three wins by the time we are tucking into our Easter eggs usually play with? Results have been ok of late, but we all see the limitations of this squad week in week out.

Disclaimer. Do I think RE is an especially good manager? Not really. But that’s not the point.
