Aston Villa 1/2 - Build Up & Match Thread

Me when JRB starts tomorrow.

All this talk of being tactically inflexible is nonsense. We've seen what happens when you alter formation for every game. He just needs to be backed by the board and supported by his players.

I agree with this to extent, and do wish the club had backed him better this month. But he also needs to manage the situation he is in. We're obviously all hoping for a miracle against Villa, but if he's sending the players out in a formation he knows they can't cope with, then he's setting them up to fail.

I'm totally on board with the principle of building an identity in the way we play, but if needs be, it shouldn't be beyond him to switch from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 whilst maintaining the identity he wants

But he has to cut the cloth he’s got not the cloth he wants. Management is about managing the resources available and in all probability a midfield two of Andre plus one will get overrun.

Nuno played Donk when it was appropriate and nobody said his teams lacked identity.

With respect, no manager is above criticism but we're all just armchair managers here and VP has enough experience to be allowed to implement his own ideas and way of playing, surely. He's only been here, what, six weeks??

No guarantee that something that looks 'obvious' to us is going to work, and he may prefer to spend his time on the training ground getting across his ideas rather than yours!

He's also accountable for the results in doing so. The same as Amorim is at Utd in trying to play a formation he doesn't have the players for or matey at Spurs with his idealistic nonsense

Oh yeah, it has to be heading somewhere, and we have to see at some point soon what his 'idea' exactly is. But that may only come when the club get him a couple of key players. It's a tough one cos we don't have months for him to settle in, but I'm still not getting fully on his case just yet.

Hobbs and Shi would have known what kind of manager he was, what formation and style he'd settled into etc when they employed him, and they should be backing him this month to help get closer to achieving that imo

The squad is a shitshow and his options are crap, even without the injuries and suspensions to key players we've had, and continue to have

Absolutely, same as the Amorim comparison, you've employed a manager to play a certain way you need to give him the tools to do so and he's been clear what he wants - just as GON was and ignored previously.

That said unlike Utd we aren't in a position to use games up bedding things in with players that either won't be integral if we do sign anyone or by the managers own words aren't suited to the way he wants to play. I'm not going to lose my shit over something which hasn't happened yet, but if he does play a midfield 2 tomorrow, one of those being Doyle or Bellegarde despite what he's said about them and we get overrun in an area where Villa are strong, then he deserves any criticism that comes his way.

If playing Andre, Doyle and Bellegarde was clearly going to he a better option in a 3 then that argument may hold some weight. But it isn’t and also weakens us elsewhere whilst also disrupting the patterns we’ve been (hopefully) developing elsewhere.

Dropping one of Sarabia, Hwang or Guedes does not weaken us.

In your opinion. Also disregards the pattern and shape the team are trying to play. Whilst also changing the roles of existing players in the team who are (were) effective.

If you've seen any of that in the last 2 games then you are seeing things I'm not. Plus Larsen is out and we don’t have a like for like replacement so we'd be playing differently in some way.

We don’t have the depth of players to play any system at this level. Back four - no. Midfield 3 - no.

343 is about as good as it gets without shoehorning, though we now have to play a lightweight midfield without Gomes Traore or even Lemina being available. Adding another lightweight midfielder doesn’t solve that.

Was it October, November time that Hobbs came out and said he was really happy with the squad balance?
