A jolly good read?

Got through the 900 or so pages of Dhalgren whilst on holiday. Fascinating book though it absolutely won't be appreciated by everyone - pk dick for instance binned his copy of it. I'd have to rate it v highly based on the puzzle it makes you think about but it's a bit of a slog to get through.

Then read the butcher boy by Patrick McCabe which wasn't as good as I'd expected.

Now about halfway through Nostrilia by cordwainer smith that I've wanted to read for a while.

I've just read the plot summary and Dhalgren sounds weird.

the euphoria of finishing a 900 page book. there seem to be those who love it and those who hate it, the latter due to it meandering and lacking a consistent plot plus it's quite bisexually explicit in parts.

weird beginning and end and there are inevitably parts of the rest that are going to drag given the sheer size of the book. but the abstract nature I think works for imaginative readers or ones who like a puzzle rather than an A to B storyline. but don't take that as an encouragement to read it from me, as it may just be the

Just embarking on ' Lincoln, Team Of Rivals '

Hope I can make it to the end and be able to say ' well, that was a jolly good read '

I need a break from Song of Fire and Ice and have no idea where to turn. I've got a database of thousands I 'acquired' but have no idea where to start. Some basic action/thriller will do to pass the time at work. Any suggestions>

Have just finished Hubert Selby Jnr Requiem For a Dream. Good read.
I'd also recommend Skagboys by Irvine Welsh - very funny.

Any Ian Rankin novel, particularly Rebus, or any of the Jack Reacher books which are excellent for letting your mind have a little escape into a bit of thriller violence and vigilantism.

I've gone for Reacher. Not read them before.

The Hard Way is my favourite Reacher book.

Still boycotting them at the moment, the immature twat that I am.

I'm going to watch the film but only to see how bad Cruise is and why they should cast Liam Neeson next time. I liked Tripwire and Persuader in particular.

All they need to do is get Lawrence Dallaglio some acting lessons and hey presto - you've got Jack Reacher.

Got the whole lot.
Excellent books.
Available Excellent condition on EBay/Amazon for about £4.

I made a daft mistake of buying 2 of them online but didn't realise I'd logged onto Amazon.com so when they arrived I was seriously pissed to see they had shite US covers on them and they were slightly smaller.
Why do the Yanks go for these shite covers??

I'd highly recommend AJ Quinnell's series of books about Creasy (who is similar to Reacher in many ways).

You may have seen the film Man On Fire starring Denzil Washington - that's based on an A J Quinnell book, but isn't the best in the series. I think they're better written than Lee Child's books.

Delighted to see they didn't cast Steven Segal!
Big right enough but a complete lummox!

Rather than a titchy little shit who's about as suited to that role as Nick Griffin is to a biopic about Nelson Mandela?

Just finished watching the excellent trilogy from Sweden, starting with The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Terrific films, whic surprised me as I didn't fancy the books and the books are often better than the filmed versions, So those three books must be fantastic!
Anyone read them?

Absolutely!
Haven't seen the film and probably wont, but I wonder if they did the same thing as when they were filming Alan Ladd in those cowboy movies.
Stood him on a box, filmed him with the camera at waist level looking up and putting other characters facing him into a little fucking trench!
