O'Neil aka GONe

I don't have the visceral personal hatred for him, he passed the buck a bit towards the end but every manager will do that when the team is in a tailspin. He isn't a massive cunt like Hoddle, Lage or Saunders absolutely were and there was at least a very brief stage where he looked alright. Wasn't a particularly brilliant job to take either, one he wouldn't have got in any normal situation but then we don't run ourselves like a normal club.

I think if you give him a Bristol City/Preston job where the brief is to make the top six of the Championship if you can but otherwise don't get drawn into crap at the wrong end, he might grow from there and become alright. He's just nowhere near what we need.

I think that’s extremely generous. Wherever he ends up his tactical naivety and apparent inability to organise a team to play in a structured way will be an issue. To manage one win in the last 26 games against an established PL team is beyond belief given our squad. The focus has inevitably been on our woeful defence but take Cunha out and our attacking play is not much better. I think it’s highly unlikely he’ll ever get close to managing in the PL again.

He may not be a cunt, but he's definitely a nob.

I'm a generous man.

I dunno, I just don't think he's a cunt. Lage was a cunt.
The longer he was here the more unlikeable he became. I guess I took a dislike to him when he went on Sky and proclaimed what a genius he was. Who could have predicted that once teams had encountered him once they’d work him out and suddenly he was back to being an over-promoted chancer who got lucky for about three months out of the 17 he was here.

I was ridiculed for suggesting this back in October (post #2636). Anyone wanna dispute it now? lol.

@Deutsch Wolf

Ridiculed? No disagreed with? Yes
Comes across very “told you so”
Arguing it’ll take more than 30 points to stay up is fair. This considering it’s been needed just about every season since the Pl became a 20 team league.
We will probably get around the late 30’s points wise. If we only got 30 points where are those 8 points going?
Plus as argued last season Luton being relegated with games to spare probably means they fell away at the end as opposed to fighting for survival.
If Ipswich were within a win of us they’d be fighting right until the end probably picking up extra points.

Thing is throwing forward to next season I can't see much changing. Leeds have the financial backing if they choose to do a Forest and ignore PSR, but anyone else that comes up will be the same cannon fodder we've seen for the last couple of years even if they get a few more points.

Then you look at the rest of the league who is going to drop off to such a degree that they'd get relegated? Can't see it being Everton in their new stadium, or West Ham after Potter has had a pre season. While Shi is there we have the capacity to kick ourselves in the bollocks, but you'd have to say we should be OK. Anyone above that would have to have something go seriously wrong, maybe Palace if they lose their manager and some key players.

We still wouldn’t have got to the required level under GON, whether that be 25, 30 or 40.
I didn't say we would. In fact i said we may well be one of the teams relegated. But my prediction of 28-30 points being enough now looks very sound.

You could very definitely say that any judgements we had of certain players while O Neil was here , must now be completely revised . Look at Bellegarde and Andre as just two examples - even J Gomes to a lesser extent .
RAN has settled down , Semedo has shown a lot of leadership , Doherty even looks like a player who cares .
In addition - players who are not up to it have been demoted in a very clear fashion by VP who O' Neil would have rated .

Does all of this mean that Fabio S.......................

Just leaving............

I think with Andre it was always clear he was a stunning player. Indeed O'Neils inability to identify how to use him was the last straw for me.

He said: “I just thought the detail of the game plan he struggled with at times. He was the one really out there who struggled to get to a couple of things we needed him to.

“Obviously he’s had a long flight and a lot of travel. He probably got back the latest out of everybody. I just felt Tommy at that moment, and moving Mario in one would help us.”

GON’s inability to play André correctly will be one of his biggest failings for me. It just baffled me at the time and continues to do so.

Simple really. He didn't want him and felt he had to play him because of his cost and he, like everyone else, wasn't suitable for whatever the fuck he was trying to do this season.

He was given a far easier ride than any manager I can remember. Media were desperate for an English manager to do well.
Blamed every aspect around GON, now looks like GON was a big problem himself. Don’t tell me it’s because of the January window either.
You can counter that with VP has had Cunha missing for 7/15 PL games he’s played.
How would GON have coped? Answer is not very well as we saw last season.
