Wolves 0 - 2 Huddersfield: The Verdict.

Good thread here:

Our IFs couldn't tuck in and back to help so we got overrun, Neves could pass out wide to Doc or Vini.

Personally i think the days of Doc playing / thinking he is a right sided no 10 need to come to end.
Today definitely had me deeply considering Vinny on the left with Jonny shifting to the right, much as I was against that when we got him.

If Doc was fully fit, he definitely didn't look it.

Have calmed down a bit now but that was still a properly atrocious performance, and any game like that will rightfully shake confidence in what the manager is doing. This is the second time Nuno has been out managed this season and it is going to be very difficult now for him to continue with his policy of 3-4-3 and nothing else.

1 point out of 15 is simply unacceptable, no matter how good we were last season.

Traore still created our best chance and fashioned another couple. If we are going to point fingers they need to be pointed at those who literally contribute nothing in an attacking sense.

Indeed. He wasn't great but to suggest he was another level below everyone else is incorrect.

His name is Dendonker. And it's 3 5 2

Patricio

Bennett Coady Boly

Doherty Mgw Neves Dendonker vinagre

Cavaliero Traore.

Gives Neves protection.
Allows us to break centrally
Gives mgw licence to attack.
Gives extra midfield cover.
Perfect against cardiff. That's a must not lose game

Watford did a job on us and Huddersfield watched that and copied it and also came out with a ridiculously comfortable 2-0 win. I wonder if any team has ever left a midfield two so isolated and overrun? Neves and Moutinho had next to no time on the ball and were completely nullified by a team who worked tirelessly to give us no time on the ball. At times when we had throws in the second half it was like we were time wasting as the thrower simply did not know where to throw the ball. Time and again Huddersfield got the ball back far too easily.

Huddersfield completely dominated through sheer numbers as too often we had three at the back marking one forward, who still won far more balls than he should have. Add in Costa, Raul and Cavaleiro being miles away from N & M and it's hardly surprising we got well beaten. If Nuno does not address this by adapting we will be in big trouble as Huddersfield did nothing that any other team in the league cant replicate simply by working very hard from the first whistle. I'm sure Warnock already knows how to set up and if we don't change at least a little they will beat us. The honeymoon is over!

You want to go two up top with neither of the genuine forwards playing?

This.

The IFs being too wide has been an issue for most of the season.

It goes without saying they needed to drop and be more central today

I didn't include half-arsed tackling that was basically sticking a foot out but in a tentative manner which suggested a lack of commitment and fear of injury that is unacceptable at any level. Boly, Costa and Neves were all guilty of shirking challenges today. They need to be shown a video of Coady's challenge at the end of the first half!

Yes they are way too far up the pitch. Why aren’t they dropping deeper to pick the ball up and run with it (probably their greatest Strength) rather than standing out wide waiting for the ball doing nothing. Don’t even try and take their full back on when they are out there either.

For me, Nuno now faces a big man management problem, as well as a tactical problem. Clearly we were bloody awful today & everyone watching - including the players - could see that. Almost impossible to tell Dendoncker, "You're still not starting." Similarly tough to justify continued starts for Costa at the expense of Traore or Jota. Even Hause is entitled to feel that another poor game will see him coming in for Boly. This is a real test for Nuno

Against a veritable 3-6-1 formation that is much easier said than done.

Thought Jota looked pretty sharp when he was on, his touch and close control looked like the player of last season. I'd have him back in.

I can see Nuno making a couple of changes but I disagree about it being impossible to not start Dendoncker for example. Bennett had a perfectly good game today really, he was arguably the strongest of the back line.

Boly has had one bad game really (today), I'd argue he has been our player of the season otherwise.

Agree with Nando - Jota will probably start at Cardiff. But I trust his judgment regardless.

That was a very worrying performance. Shocking thing is it came out of nowhere really and at the time I didn't really know what to say, was just very surprising. Performance was very very bad and if we play like that again we're going to be in some real trouble. Hopefully it won't so I'm not going to needlessly dwell on the future like that but you do wonder just how this has happened.

As has been said, ten of the eleven players started against Arsenal and put in a very good performance. Yet today we were terrible. Sloppy passing, lazy defending, lost out on every second ball, aimless going forwards for the most part, weak crossing, and the forward line did not connect at any point really. I didn't even think Huddersfield were that good really. They looked to press the midfield two like Watford had but Neves and Moutinho just seemed quite complacent on the ball and cost possession far too frequently. Otherwise, Huddersfield were organised but hardly seemed like world beaters - we just made a string of errors that allowed them to threaten. Surprised we only lost 2-0 to be honest as I felt it could have been 3 or 4 by the end.

Hard to find positives overall. Vinagre was brought more of an attacking threat down the left and had the beating of his man quite often in the first-half. MGW looked positive and tried to bring the ball forwards. Jota was OK when he came on. Doherty, Boly, Cavaleiro, Traore, Moutinho - awful. Neves was poor too although not to the same extent as the first bunch but the reality is nobody had what could actually be considered a good game, Coady was passable.

Watched the goals back now and the first is a real mess. Doherty gives the ball away with a directionless pass, has no idea what to after so gets caught in-between Durm and Billing, then he lazily trots back for Durm to glide past him on the overlap put in a cross which they score from that Neves needs to clear. Second one starts from Traore giving possession away cheaply (muscled off the ball much too often) and then a silly foul from Boly leading to a FK which Patricio simply has to save. Watched it a few times and I don't think Neves did much bad in the wall, he hardly turns away. Curious what Costa was set out to though as he seems to just be standing there.

The Traore debate has been reignited (as it does most weekends) and most of my points have been made but I'm still not keen at all. He set up one chance for Jiminez but otherwise did nothing at all. He runs down blind alleys, his output is inconsistent (and that's being generous) and his decision-making is truly abysmal. This is our record signing, we paid quite a lot of money for him, yet the situations where he works are very niche. If you spend the money we did on Traore yet find it very difficult to justify him ever actually starting a match he does not warrant the fee. Looks like a parks player most of the time.

We are a newly promoted team. For me I would rather lose to city United and arsenal than Brighton Watford and Huddersfield but that's just me. In reality we are 24 points from survival. Let's get them and take stock

We will need a lot less than that. I reckon 32 keeps you up this season.

Those hoping for a change in system will be waiting a while.

Nuno said straight after the game that he won’t be changing it.

That right hand side will be addressed properly in January. And I'm sure another striker. For all what Doherty and Bennett have done has been almost equalled in major errors.
