From what I've read on NSC in the past he wanted to follow Poyet, Buckley and Bridcutt back to the Premier League but nothing ever came of it. I remember him doing well for them so hopefully that transfers itself to Wolves.
Dangerous stuff going into the murky world of free agency as a keeper. By default most clubs already have an established number one they're pretty happy with. They don't view it as a priority in the market but will happily collect 8 central midfielders or 6 strikers. No-one wants to be paying big money for a keeper who hardly or never plays if they can help it.
Look at Pepe Reina's career trajectory over the last five years. Look at the awful back up keepers Liverpool, Everton and Sunderland have at the moment, cheap and non-complaining wins the day.
Good signing, he did well at Brighton and we now have two proven goalkeepers. It will only help us, Ikeme will have to continue working hard and if he did suffer a dip in form or as has been the case with him before get injured we have a safe pair of hands to come in.
Tom Starke is never realistically going to displace/provide meaningful competition to Manuel Neuer and neither will Pepe Reina. There are many players who we could name who have made a career out of being a second choice goalkeeper. In his 20 years at Newcastle, Steve Harper made a mind-bending 157 competitive appearances. Hilario made 20 appearances in 8 years for Chelsea and Turnbull only 7. These players are cheap and cheerful at best.
He is only here until McCarey is fit at the moment (January). No difference between this and bringing in a loan player for a few months. We would have loaned a keeper anyway as the loan window closes at the end of this month and we couldn't risk going a month or so with the very very inexperienced Flatt being one punch of the tactics board away from being number 1.
I guess the key is the fact that the loan window closes, and the risk isn't worth it. But as long as it's only until January and not a complete waste of money like Basso was.
