The Live Match Discussion Thread: 2019/2020

It's good to see that Sig Hansen from Deadliest Catch is settling into his new role as Flamengo manager.

How on earth did that Firmino effort stay out?

This is a really enjoyable match

Ref's had a shocker with VAR there at the end of the Liverpool game.

Mane tripped as he's about to shoot and spanners it miles wide, referee awards a penalty and books the defender. Gets reviewed and he's asked to come look at the monitor to check if it's inside or outside the box, looks to be outside but can definitely see the contact that causes him to skew the shot and the referee just cancels everything to give a goal kick.

Bournemouth V Burnley xG 0.13 - 0.17. Think that’s the lowest I’ve ever seen

I am amazed they stretched the highlights as long as they did on MOTD!

It looked awful.

Just watched Villa highlights, absolute mince. Take Grealish or McGinn out the midfield and they’re lost. 2 full backs were hopeless yesterday.
Where on earth did £100mill go? Smith is looking very tactically nieve to.

Presume McGinn is out for a while. He looked in proper agony when he went over his ankle.

Wasn't long ago I was reading people suggesting they would swap Neves and Mout for Grealish and McGinn. Amazingly that train of thought was derailed when McGinn played like a L2 player at Molineux

They are just far too open without having any decent players to make up for it. 2 full backs playing far too high with only one DM (and he’s rubbish). Hourihane and Luiz are nowhere near good enough to control the game and their striker can’t hold the ball or score. So they lose the ball, full backs out of position and midfielders too far forward.

Then away from home their striker can’t hold the ball up and anyone of Trezeguet, El Ghazi, Jota aren’t good enough on the counter.

If they are going to maintain 4 at the back with attacking full backs then they need 2 disciplined midfielders who never get ahead of the ball. Obviously going to be difficult to rectify the lack of quality up the top end without spending a fair chunk, but they’ve already spent £50m on the dross they’ve got.

Runs around a lot and can shoot. Would be ok for Dendoncker in a 3 in midfield. Grealish would be alright for us in the forward line. Certainly can’t play in midfield in a 2 and probably not in a 3 unless you’re averaging like 65% possession.

Well, Mings was about £25m. An over-payment, but a decent player.

Wesley and Douglas Luiz look awful buys, and Matt Targett is unbelievable. It's all well and good being below the required level, but to combine that with laziness and cowardice in play, my oh my...

Trezeguet isn't good enough. Fake Jota can't even get on the bench most weeks.

To be fair to McGinn he's been carrying an injury for a few weeks so he's been well off where he normally is

Foolish by villa to not let him recover and risk further injury

Ankle fracture for McGinn.

That touch from Nakamba yesterday. Good lord.

That McGinn injury was pointless too, was running round like a headless chicken after he thought he was fouled and went for a massive lunge to block a clearance and landed badly.

So McGinn out until the end of March realistically.

They have a very difficult January market as they now need to replace McGinn somehow (unless they believe Bang Average Nakamba and Grealish is sufficient) and they absolutely HAVE to get a centre forward in as Wesley is awful and they can't carry him in the hope he might come good.

And that is before they look at their wingbacks, who are sub-standard, and they could probably do with one more centre back, and El-Ghazi doesn't seem to be good enough either up front out wide.

Apart from that the B6 garden is rosy.

It's one hell of a shopping list needed, in the more difficult of the windows, and they already splurged a vast amount of cash in the summer so the books might not take the strain of too much spending. If they went down, that would definitely be the case.

They must win their next two otherwise that shopping task becomes even harder as their position will almost look hopeless. They probably need to explore the loan market as much as they can to keep the outlay down while solving immediate problems, and then re-visit in the summer.

Back 4 of Guilbert, Hause, Engels and Targett. That’s about as poor as you get at this level and means you’ll need to score at least 2 per game to get anything.
Also comes back to loaning your main goal threat last season with no buying option.

They might have to look at bringing Chester in as Konsa hasn't worked either.

Bar Heaton, they bought a lot of mince in the summer.
