Obviously we don't know the details, but if he's just been putting an acca on every Saturday then that seems really harsh. If he's been betting on things he can influence then fair enough
I believe the rules are really clear that any betting on football is strictly verboten if you're a pro player.

Could be that Brentford drop down the table a fair chunk next season?

It's harsh if you consider Deshaun Watson as an analogue, but that maybe says more about the NFL than the FA (or whoever it is that hands this stuff down).

Whilst I agree he knows the rules etc, it's laughable when there are so many sides sponsored (yep, I know that's going to change) by Betting companies and how Ray Winstone's moon face appears on TV every pre and mid game ad break encouraging us all to spunk the family savings up the wall on Arsenal recovering from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

You don't get betting ads during most if not all games now?

Oh yeah I know it's an established rule, no secret etc. But when you're looking at 3-9 games for offences ranging from career ending challenges, elbows, racism, biting, and not even that for diving and abusing the ref, then half a season for gambling (obviously depending on the context) just seems a bit much (or at least the others not harsh enough)

Banned during the game, can be shown before and after, there haven't been in play ads for a few years

Others not harsh enough is the problem. Always has been.

Fair enough, I think you all get my point though, there's a significant amount of hypocrisy here, the game enjoys a lot of funding from gambling. The fine/ban is totally out of balance with some of the examples Del gave.

In fact look at Forest, as a club they were fined 50k for letting their fans roam around the pitch and assault players.

Wasn't there an NFL receiver banned for a year for gambling? Calvin Ridley maybe?

I think the harshness of the ban for gambling is because it jeopardises the integrity of the game? If you can't trust what you're watching to be honest because a player might be doing something shady to influence the result in order to win at the bookies, then the whole sport gets called into question.

The integrity of football is on shaky ground with some people anyway, with question marks over poor refereeing and some openly bad VAR decisions. Players gambling will always be dealt with harshly I'd imagine.

Aye, I thought that was pretty fucked, too. Wanna say that Ridley had gotten himself addicted (could have hallucinated that bit tbf).

I don't necessarily think the players should get off Scot free, so to speak, and I understand why it's very easy for governing bodies to swing a heavy axe over this stuff. But does it feel like justice is being served? Eh, not really, IMO.

Dire's answered it really. All the other situations elbows, spitting, leg breaking tackles etc affect the individual. Betting has the potential to impact the whole game hence the penalties. I'm not saying other sanctions are correct, just why betting is so severe

You have it was 2 seperate bets, from memory one included the Falcons but it was to win. Williams at the Lions has got himself a 6 game ban for betting on something he is allowed to but doing it at the company facility which he isn't

Ridley stepped away from the team for something not long before the gambling came out (I think?). Maybe I was connecting dots poorly.

Anxiety, brought on originally from a burglary. I mean it could be a cover, but that's the official reason

Much shorter bans have been given for racism and that certainly doesn’t only affect the receiver.
