It's quite telling I can only name you four good central midfielders in 27 years.

Rae was good in the PL, we didn't really "do" ball players for many, many years. You would have thought McGhee would have gone down that road but no, Chubs Ferguson was the closest he got.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Marsden to add to that list.

Good shout but having only played 8 games for us it's hard to include him. That's fewer games than Tom Huddlestone played.

Shocked how few he played for us, I had it in my head that he played for a season or so with us, suppose that shows the impact he made at the time.

Never forget when he was wheeled off the pitch on a warehouse trolley

This sounds good:

After saying every senior Sunderland player is available for sale Dick Advocaat declined invitations to confirm he intends to see out his one-year contract.

“I don’t want to discuss that now,” he said. “It’s not an issue, we’re concentrating on the Swansea game.” Even so, it is clear he is not exactly thrilled with a side tthat have conceded seven goals in two games. “Every player is for sale,” said a man already braced for a relegation battle. “If the player wants to go then he can go.”

He hopes any departures would fund new arrivals. ”I have definitely said to our owner [Ellis Short] we needed five or six new players,” he said. “He says we have four or five [already]. But I said we need quality players. You always get what you pay for. But I have to be fair to the owner; he never mentioned a figure to me.

“We can compete to stay in the league, but no more. Financially, at the moment we can’t compete with other clubs.” Asked if Sunderland faced a relegation fight, he said: “Yes, the problem is that all the other teams are spending fortunes, and we cannot.”

Sunderland’s manager also made it plain Jermain Defoe will not be offered a central attacking role: “Jermain Defoe will play on the left or the right side – or on the bench. Nobody can tell me where he has to play. I decide which player plays where, not players.”

So much wrong with that, refuse to dampen speculation you might leave of your own accord, slate the owner for not providing you with funds, demoralise the squad by saying you want tons of new players, that they were all cheap therefore rubbish and are all up for sale, commit to the nutbar idea of playing Jermain Defoe in a wide role which he has done approximately no times in his entire career...

Dick Advocaat writing his own resignation letter it seems, he obviously wants out. Norwich should place a cheeky low bid for Steven Fletcher they would probably get him.

If he was willing to go there that is, doesn't seem like he really cares about his football much anymore, think he's fairly content just picking up the money and living reasonably close to the border.

I still think Steven Fletcher has a massive point to prove in the right side, though his career choices so far have hardly helped grow his reputation. I still back him for 15 Premier league goals a season with the correct service..

I still rate his ability, even at international level he's looked capable in an improving Scotland side, I just don't think he has that mentality to want to go and show everyone what he can do. Sunderland were sort of on the up when he went there but things have gone badly wrong since yet I don't think I've ever seen anything suggesting he wants out, he seems pretty content with where he is, perhaps if Celtic had the sort of money to bring him back North of the border he'd be making more noise about a move but unless an English club with European football came in for him, unlikely, then I just don't see him being that arsed.

Lots of talk that his attitude is poor and he is one of the (relatively) longstanding players there who contribute to their annual crisis, went above Di Canio's head after he seemingly sussed them all out early on. He also looks nowhere near the player he was here, I think Mark is right, he isn't interested any more.

Sounds like he needs a new club to be honest.

Genuinely thought be could play for a top six side when he left us. Sunderland are an absolute state of a club though - nobody leaves that place as a better player than when they arrived.

The only place I could see him going is Celtic if Sunderland were willing to let him go for pretty much nothing, other than that I don't think there's anyone who could offer anything suitably enticing that would be in the market for a player who's done little to nothing for several years when the bar set by his club is particularly low.

He's out of contract in the summer so I'd imagine clubs will have a look if there's no fee to pay. If Connor Wickham can somehow get a £7m move with his 11 goals in four seasons then anything is possible.

Just a heads up for those who play The Sun's Dream Team.
