Related: the 2010 World Cup is when I fell in love with the game (or at least Xabi Alonso…) so your feelings there seem right

They qualified for France 98 and roped in as many through parentage as they could. Fair enough.

His one solitary international goal was in the World Cup.
Had to have been a maddening amount of good English players who just never got capped in the 90s (some justifiably, I’m sure). In my head those teams were fucking stacked, whether they showed it or not.

England were SHIT in 2010 but that isn't the thing, I loved Euro 2000 and we were even worse in that.

It was just an appalling tournament. About three good games in the whole thing and soundtracked by those bloody vuvuzelas.

Julian Dicks, Tony Coton and Steve Bruce probably the best three. Not that many others who totally missed out

Tbf the joke was “worst tourney produces worst fan”

I’m sure my feelings about it are irrevocably intwined with the magic of falling in love with something new that you can only capture so many times in life.

Also, did I mention Xabi? 😮‍💨

He got a bit done over there. He had a load of freebies and gave them to family/friends...then they got sold on to a brewery who pulled some kind of publicity stunt with them and FIFA weren't happy so ITV had to take action. Obviously your name is on them, you take responsibility, but he didn't tout them himself.

Two additional things:

1) Tickets for the 2010 World Cup should really have been worth less than £0, the worst tournament on a footballing level that has ever and will ever exist

2) He's a born and bred Stokie, not really Jamaican :D
<pedant alert> He was born and grew up in Newcastle-under-Lyme...

What's the consensus on Collins time at Brentford? Poorly coached at Wolves, or still a bit clumsy?

He's still a complete liability.

He has a better partner or partners than Captain Passive now though and they bail out some of his idiocy.

Just got used to the pace of the PL and a bit more experienced. Like Kilman the issue wasn’t letting him go for a small profit, it was trying to replace him on the cheap. He’d be first CH named if he was still here.

To me:
1. He's not as good as he might think he is.
2. He's pretty good in the air.
3. He's pretty good with the ball at his feet.
4. Hes mobile and athletic.
5. He's hotheaded and makes bad decisions which undermine the positive attributes above.

I do think he's improving with age and experience though.

I wanted Paul Simpson, Nathan Blake and Alex Rae years before we signed them and Ian Taylor, Neil Redfearn, David Johnson and Jim Magilton before we never signed them.

Also saw both Robbie Earle and Chris Coleman against us in Division Three and it was blindingly obvious even as a kid as I was back then that they were headed for bigger things.
That game when Johnson bagged a hat trick and got clapped off at molineux. Everyone in the ground thought we should have signed him.

I can't recall many oppo players get clapped off at molineux.

Collins has played very well this season, Brentford fans love him don’t they now? Most of the times I’ve seen him play this season he’s looked pretty solid and less gangly. If he kicks on now as he seems to be doing he’ll play at a really good level I think.

Fair play to him, but I still think the profit we made on him is some of the most bafflingly good business we've done under Fosun.

Glad he seems to be figuring it out, more glad that it didn't happen here (as if being coached by Gitflip O'Neil would have been good for him).

Don't think he got a hat trick here. Clapped off vs Ipswich after he'd signed for them and scored for sure but that was 1-1.

Before that we beat Bury 4-2.

Yeh, I don’t think anyone was quibbling at the time even if I think it’s a short sighted approach for Hobbs to sell someone he clearly rated highly just to appease Lopetegui, who was clearly off.

It’s a great point too, under GON he would have been all over the place
