Ex-Wolf Watch

Scarily it is 15 years next month since we signed him.

One that never made any sense, we are absolutely notorious for keeping players here for years long after it's been clear they're never going to make it (like Connor Ronan went about 5 years between actual first team appearances, for instance). We paid money for him, he obviously had some ability, he was still young (22 or so) and we just released him despite having an option in our favour on his contract.

Somewhere deep in the club I think there is someone who’s actually quite nice and rather than waste players careers would rather they go on to be successful elsewhere. Doesn’t often happen, but Friend, Vokes and even Coady (to Everton) were allowed to go for not very sensible business reasons.

Vokes was one that needed to move on I think. The loans weren't working and he only ever started 4 league games for us.

We made it nice and easy for Rui to leave.

And Adama to Barca was fucking insane - but possibly just "nice".

We had 2 windows where we insisted Spurs pay what we wanted for him and wouldn't move then Barca came in. Yes we were nice to Adama to get him the move he wanted but at the same time screwed ourselves over with a ridiculous deal and a weakened area in the squad.

Worst signings for me in terms of how badly thought through they were (no order, except #1):

Guedes
P Jones (2004)
Frankowski
Halford
Mason
Ashley
R Taylor
Clarke (2014)
Daley
Atkins

Sagbo has to be in that list.

Sign a guy who has always been an out-and-out #9 (we don't need to argue his quality, necessarily, but that's what he was), and play him almost exclusively as a #10, which he lacked just about all of the necessary skills to be good at.

KJ got a lot right but man did he do some weird shit once we were back in the Champo.

Sagbo was a shitty one month loan. Doesn't even come into it IMO.

They all cost us actual money. In the case of Frankowski, literally all the money we had.

They must be bad if you’ve not mentioned

Then club secretary Keith Pearson wanted a second opinion on Daley’s knee and Taylor insisted we sign him immediately. That worked out well…

Albeit shit, Atkins served a role in the side whereas we used to collect centre halves, who in the main were unfit for purpose. Thinking of Blades and Hindmarsh amongst others.

Atkins was supposed to fix midfield, Premier League winner that he was.

He did not.

Blades was shit but wasn't obviously a terrible idea before he kicked a ball. All those 10 were for various reasons.

My overriding memory of Blades was after conceding he’d throw his arms in air and look around to see who was at fault. He needed a mirror most of the time. Utterly useless!

We did but got nearly all of it back and he wasn't even here six months. And he was a good player everywhere but here. Doesn't get near that lot.

Atkins was a bog standard holding midfielder of his time. He did nothing spectacular but allowed the more skilful Blackburn players to do their job. I think the main issue he had at Wolves was many thought that as a PL winner there would be more to his game and the cupboard was bare.
