Everton (A) 26/8: Build-Up & Match Thread

Horrible feeling we’ll be dicked by a set piece, Tarkowski header more than likely.

Had some Velcro on his boots on a couple of runs in both games. That set up for RAN chance is great skill, Vision and balance. It’s even laid on a plate for him where he can walk on to it and any decent contact on target with his right is a goal. Why do that when he can Control it 5 yards instead with his left.
That’s the bit that frustrates me. Lack of care for their first touch or the one that really pisses me off most right now is passes behind team mates to slow our attacks down needlessly

That second one has been a staple for as long as I can remember! Why play a threatening ball into space when you can safely roll it into someone's feet instead? Amount of times players have to receive the ball under pressure because of a poor pass into them giving the defender time to get out to them. Embarrassing.

It's like they either don't back themselves to make the riskier pass or they don't trust their team mates to receive a more challenging pass so always just go for the safer option.

We have to start doing it now.

JG, Lemina, Bouba, these are all front foot players. Let alone the attackers.

I don't think it's even necessarily about the passes being positive or particularly forward thinking. Just hit it like you're a professional footballer rather than a toddler with a sponge ball in the back garden and thrust that the bloke on the other end can also look like a professional footballer rather than Ronald McDonald in his comedy oversized shoes. Hell, maybe even back them to make up more than 5 yards to meet the ball rather than pass it to the exact spot they're in when you spot the pass.

Same problem that slowed all the attacks down with that crap also trashed any chance of playing out form the back. Constantly playing themselves into tighter and tighter spaces whilst inviting more and more pressure rather than zipping it about trying to break through a press. Often looked like a fear of failure, better to complete a poor pass than struggle at a good one.

He's actually not offended me for three games in a row now (if you count Rennes) which is a world record.
I've said it earlier in the week, Hwang is on a 3 game redemption tour. Hopefully it continues, but he'll probably go back to the Hwang we're used to. And that'll be O'Neil's fault too.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil has been speaking to the media as his team prepares to take on Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Here are the main lines from his news conference:

  • Matheus Nunes has been linked with a move to Manchester City but he is seen as an "important player" for Wolves: "He's got four or potentially five years left on his contract. He's obviously suspended for this weekend but we rejected a bid because we didn't feel it met our valuation of what Matheus is worth to us. So, we move on."
  • With one week left until the transfer window closes, O'Neil clarified Wolves' transfer position: "I don't think people leaving are the only way that people will be arriving. There's things going on and we're hoping to add and make things a little bit stronger. We're trying to be active in the market, within our budget and what suits the club."
  • He said there is no extra emphasis being put on the Everton game after both teams had a poor start: "I don't agree with it being a 'big game'. I don't think it's bigger than any other game that we've played so far, or the one that we'll play the following week. There's probably 34 games to go before you can start talking about some games being bigger than others."
  • O'Neil is "keen to deliver his messages through the team and the performances" as he believes that is what supporters will be "interested in".
  • The key to a successful season will be supporters "getting behind the group" and "everybody pushing in the right direction".

If the key to a successful season is a bunch of folks not on the pitch we're fucked.

I dunno, it's just bland press conference stuff. He's right in as much as whatever we're left with on September 2nd, we have to get behind them at the actual games. Chatting shit elsewhere is fine.

For all that he's objectively got way more credibility as a manager, Lopetegui's English wasn't very good at all and Lage's was appalling. Nuno could speak English superbly but I could write you his imaginary presser right now. I guarantee Everton would be "tough, very tough". It's not like he's coming off the back of superb oratory.

Glad he's not immediately adding extra pressure to this one. Though I'm not sure what the heck he thinks we might do in terms of incoming transfers.

Nuno used to call for crowd unity all the time. Non-story, that bit.

He's might be saying there's no added pressure at this stage but doubt thats what he really thinks. He'll know he's not flavour of the month and this game everyone will expect something from it or the fans will panic (even more) and confidence will be lower still.

If he thinks there is added pressure three games into a season then he's in the wrong line of work.

We've lost the first 2 games, obviously games most expected to. Everton have been shit for ages, have started this season shit, everyone knows this game and games like it are ones we need to be winning at any time of the season, imo there'll be added pressure.

Quite like his first 3 bullet points. The other 2 are bland nothingness comments.

There’s evidently added pressure as he’s got clear caveats around the first two games but will be expected to get something out of the next two. Starting with 4 losses in the spin would be… sub-optimal. It’s how he deals with the pressure that counts, and if he can maintain an even keel then that’s a good thing.

First and (probably) last trip to Goodison tomorrow. Hoping to leave with a 100% win record.
