Euro 2020

No, I lived near Netherstowe but father was Irish Catholic mate, so had to go all the way to Aldridge
3 of my best mates went to St Francis, but I think you are a bit younger. They would have left in '88

Italy haven't had a home knockout game. The whole concept was flawed to begin with it came from Platini so that's to be expected, but there are 2 elements which add to the accusations of unfairness. Firstly, they put the semi and final both in England at a time when England are quite good and secondly Covid has meant that home advantage is exasperated fan wise. Without it, we'd only have an allocation on Sunday consistent with any other finalist, although obviously a lot of the 'neutrals' with tickets would have been English, but with Covid we pretty much will have the entire stadium. So in what was supposed to be a tournament without a home nation, we've pretty much been it from our teams perspective

It's not unfair because it's a product of circumstance, but it has given us a significant advantage
Your last 16 game v Germany was originally due for Dublin, then changed to Wembley when our government couldn't guarantee fans would be allowed to attend.
So that exaggerated the situation.
Not England's problem that they made it through to the final when it was scheduled for their home ground (same as this years superbowl)
The fucked up schedule of some teams criss crossing Europe was unfair but again not Englands problem, you can lay at Platini's and our fucking genius Delaney's door.

I know that's the new 'cool' stance to despise everything Monarchy, country, history, but out of curiosity what country would you be proud to be part of ?
Why would I be proud of where I was born? Genuine question. I don’t get it, I didn’t do anything to be born here - it’s purely accidental. There are plenty of people who were born here of which to be proud, but that doesn’t equate to being proud of your nationality. Bizarre concept imo.

I don’t disagree with that - it’s tribalism, England is my team but nothing other than that really. Anyone who is proud because they are English needs to have a good hard think about themselves.

There’s a difference between supporting your team, wanting your rivals to lose and printing it on the front page of your newspaper though.
Am I not allowed to be proud of the good stuff England (more Britain really)) has done while at the same time be ashamed of some of our imperialist past?
Its probably pedantry but what your describing is Nationalism rather than patriotism in my book.
Anyone who reads or takes any notice of newspapers needs to have a good hard think about themselves imo.
As for tribalism, I don't think you get a more tribalist person than a club football fan.
Tomorrow night I'll be clapping the England team, jumping in the air if we score, celebrating if we win.......I'll also be wincing and feeling ashamed when England fans boo the Italian national anthem.

yeah, why do they boo the other teams national anthem...disgraceful, nobody here in sweden would do that(other than maybe an asshole or two maybe)

because while I'm proud of certain aspects of our country, unfortunately there are a lot of scumbags and most of them seem to be football fans (just thought I'd throw a bit of hyperbole in there as its popular on here atm)

Alright, yes you have a lot to be proud of in your country, Im afraid of the populism/nationalism that is swiping over the whole world though..

Don't consider myself patriotic at all, but have listened to three lions a dozen times already today (it's still morning over here). Also I am not at all emotional - usually - but if England do win tomorrow, it is guaranteed I will start crying.
So the big question is where to watch the game. At home with my wife where I can eat & drink as much as I want but with commentary in Spanish (it's not on English speaking terrestrial tv), or in a bar with my wife's best friend (who I don't like) and a bunch of English strangers who will be too loud (and patriotic) for me. I might let the wife decide.

Angel di Maria is still top 3 in the world on his day. And, so far, today has been his day. Just an utterly fabulous footballer.

Oh fuck. Did I jinx him?

Update: No, he’s fine. Looked like he might have done his Achilles’ tendon.

I stayed up to watch it. Don't think there was 1 minute of solid football played ha. Constant stop start

Me too, there were some tasty looking challenges going in and Neymar in the thick of it as usual. Good goal by Di Maria to win it.

Gianni Infantino in attendance then he'll be at Wembley tonight, he'll be tired!

I liked the South American band playing throughout

I came in from the pub sat down to match it saw De Maria goal and then fell asleep, woke up just as the prize giving was going on.

Dont feel too bad now as i missed nothing.

Sky running with Trippier in for Saka.

David Moyes article in the times wanting England to win, Rice to score and claiming England has been very good to him. Nice to hear in comparison to the anyone but England dross that seemed to be prevelent from certain Scottish media
