It is logical and I agree but the problem for me is that he has had 9 days to potentially pass it on elsewhere.

I hope that he'll be OK Tony and that it won't come to anything more.

It reads to me as though the person tested positive recently, but as TT’s son hasn’t seen him for 5 days he only needs to isolate for another 9 days.

Other way round Tredman. Last been in contact 9 days ago, so only 5 days to go. They had a test on Monday and was confirmed yesterday.

I understand the logic, but I think the more worrying thing is that if he does have it and there are no symptoms so hopefully doesn't, there are a lot of people he will have been in a lot closer contact with over that period who he could well have given it to. It would appear this wasn't a friend just someone he sat next to in a class. His friends are all still at school, football, work etc. Shows how easy it is to spiral

Bit odd then - you'd imagine that person tested positive within the last 48 to 72 hours, so wouldn't have been infectious 9 days ago. Unless they tested +ve ages ago and our world beating system took this long to send out the notifications.

We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the school.

We have followed the national guidance and have identified that your child has been in close contact with the affected individual. In line with the national guidance we recommend that your child now stay at home and self-isolate until 19th October 2020 – this is 14 days from the last time they had contact with a positive case in school.

We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of COVID 19 to others in the community.

If your child is well at the end of the 14 days period of self-isolation, then they can return to usual activities

Reading what's going in the UK just beggars belief - here in Melbourne our State Govt are authoritarian and incompetent - over there you guys are making Fawlty Towers look like the high benchmark of hotel hospitality.

Where I work we currently have the following out of school

Year 10
Year 11
1/3 of Year 9
half of Year 12

The level of uncertainty and disruption alone is stressing everyone out, let alone the impact it's having on the actual delivery of lessons and the mounting pressure on the students.

Did this mean that everyone in your household has to isolate too? If your son is deemed “potentially infectious” then surely the same applies to everyone in the household too?

Nope, not as far as I understand. That would only be the case if his son developed symptoms himself.

Absolutely, but if you have to start requiring contacts of contact to isolate, you might as well shut the schools now.

Well I guess this is where the government need to either go all or nothing. This in between is neither effective yet still causing mass disruption (not just schools, businesses, livelihoods etc.)

Possibly.

If it was my middle son's year at school that would be 500 odd pupils, 2 parents and brothers/sisters. As an estimate that would be 2000 people isolating without symptoms and this could happen on several occasions. The country would come to a halt if repeated across the nation.
