    Keir Starmer at it again..

Oh yes, agreed. The ramifications adding CGT now are enormous, the impact of which is a boat all chancellors so far have decided not worth rocking. I’ll stand by the principle though. Tax is understandably applied to gains on investment property, it just seems utterly bizarre it’s excluded...

    Keir Starmer at it again..

One of the glaring tax omissions is CGT on a house sale. You pay CGT on additional properties but are exempt when it’s your home. Quite shocking people can make vast Capital Gain sums on their property for doing absolutely nothing other than living there and when you decide to cash in the...

    Keir Starmer at it again..

That’s not a trump card unfortunately, he’s made a very valid point. The young of today will not get the same rewards for the same amount of work. It won’t be possible to retire with enormous equity from a house-buying journey spanning say 40 years. There will be no such thing as a final salary...

On that note too, I was thinking you can get an awful lot of Uber miles or zip car hire for the sort of numbers required to keep a new compliant motor on the road. I think we’re heading that way and have probably seen the peak of car ownership, but that’s probably a tangent for another time.

Of course, you’ll always find exceptional cases, but the 20 limits and crawling traffic close the safety margins between old and new to something that’s nn longer a great concern.

When most roads are 20 mph limits you don’t have to worry too much about the affects of a crash anymore.

On that subject, it’s worth paying attention to what’s happening around these parts since the introduction of the expanded Ulez. Essentially, there’s a boom in the older, less fashionable (and subsequently cheaper) ‘survivor’ cars (crappy Morris Marinas, beaten up Austin’s and so on) that are 40...

    Ex-Wolf Watch

Was looking at that thinking any of those who made it must’ve turned professional around the time I was about 8/9 so could well have seen them play at sometime and tried to work them out without Googling. Recognised the obvious one of RW, also John Trewick, figured the CW would likely be Clive...

Not an expert on this but I think once it’s blocked you’re pretty much done and you’re not really going to be able to pull it back by burning deposits off. Very similar to a dpf in that sense. Short distance stop-start isn’t the best scenario for longevity but if yours is a repeat offender...

    Keir Starmer at it again..

Hardly surprising the right are going to be all over this. Inevitably going to be comparisons made between sentences, but I think he’s going to have to get both barrels as some sort of appeasement. Going to be interesting to see if he gets a lesser violent disorder sentence on the basis he...

    The Car Thread

It’s a big scene and something that’s been winking at me for a while. The general consensus is it’s pretty criminal cannibalising an iconic motor that has an iconic engine, but in reality most classic cars are fucking terrible to drive by modern standards and pump out horrendous levels of...

Yeah, I could have a charger fitted at home and an EV would work for a huge % of my journey’s but it’s an unnecessary faff for the still relatively significant number of trips outside of the range. I’m not sure they are a no brainier either. There seems to be a bit too much obsession with the...

I’m increasingly thinking I’m going to go back to diesel and buying one of the powerful yet economical larger engined bad boys. With the Euro 6’s still in production there should be a good number of years ahead before they are culled, so they’re still the way to go if you’re not obsessed with...

Yep, I mentioned on the ‘Car’ thread some time ago that EV’s were about to lose their preferential treatment and be subject to the Expensive Car Supplement of £410 for vehicles over £40,000. Thing is, that threshold was set in 2017 when there’s a fair argument a motor over that value could be...

Very interesting reading this. I semi-retired at 48 and fully retired upon relocating here at 58. I’m extremely fortunate in many senses but the one very significant struggle I have is the ‘lack of purpose’ Mark said his dad is experiencing too. It’s a sensitive subject and you have to be very...
