    2024 General Election Thread

Yeah I think that's fair, and it would have mirrored what the Leave campaign had: Vote Leave were the official, respectable campaign putting out charts and graphs while Farage and his coterie in Leave.EU kept slinging out mud, and if Vote Leave were criticised for Leave.EU's messaging they could...

    2024 General Election Thread

It's always going to be one of those big what-ifs of British politics. My own take on it is that Corbyn wasn't anywhere near enough of a known entity to have that kind of sway over the kinds of places you mention which did end up tilting towards Leave. As evidence, I'd point to the 2017...

    2024 General Election Thread

There's a lot of polling around showing that there are clear majorities for raising taxes now, because it's very obvious that public services need more funding. I wouldn't expect that positivity to survive for very long - no more than a couple of years, if I had to guess - however, unless those...

I think this idea that Corbyn doing fuck all during the Brexit campaign swung it for Leave is pretty overblown, IMO, but I really don't see Starmer as being a particularly good campaigner in that context either. His whole thing is being boring and competent, it was a referendum launched in...

    The Euro 2024 Thread

One of those that looks a lot worse in the slow-mo than real-time. Think he was trying to move his arm away, just didn't have the reaction speed, but in the replay the ref was shown he's looking straight at the ball and it only shows the build-up to the touch.

Whether he actually attempted the dive or not is completely irrelevant - the guy's in the space the goalie would have to dive into, that means he's impacting play. The only thing I'm confused about is why it took so long, it honestly seems a textbook example of interfering with play to me 🤷‍♂️

How is that controversial? He can't dive, he's clearly interfering with play!

Gotta agree with the Danes that the ref is being very kind to England with some of these decisions too.

    2024 General Election Thread

Yeah it would have required some mutant Labour-Lib Dem-SDLP-Caroline Lucas minority coalition which still needed the support of most of Plaid Cymru and the SNP combined to get anything barely over the line. Total non-starter. And for whatever good it's worth, the 2010-2015 coalition is the...

Your pet push-polling company has detected the exact kind of Reform SURGE you've been so breathlessly pushing for weeks, Matt? Has it really? Gosh, what are the chances?

    Trump

Yeah the US is unique among major democracies in how old its average top-level politician is (senators especially). It seems to be something inherent to the political system - back in the 80s and 90s the first wave of baby boomer politicians were constantly griping that the generation which...

Oh come on, helping someone out with an umbrella is bad now too?

Everyone I know who lives in Tottenham thinks Lammy's a shallow careerist. Has a rep for not being a particularly attentive constituency MP.

Thought this would be a more even match-up than this, Switzerland seem very comfortable here.

    VAR Stay or Go

The editor in me has an eye twitching at the redundant inclusion of "player" in there (as opposed to what?), but yes such a bleedingly obvious improvement it's hard to believe it isn't already happening.

    Keir Starmer at it again..

It was only Blair's second term that the spending taps opened, most notably for the NHS - big boost to funding that Brown brought in. Labour are going to raise CGT, and they're going to recalculate the council tax bands. They're also going to get in and Reeves is going to go "wow the books are...

    Keir Starmer at it again..

Man, that's weak sauce. As they get more desperate I'm expecting Guido (or another of that toxic right-wing media ilk) to let slip who the shadow frontbencher is whose recent affair produced a child, and who then paid the mother off to not put his name as the father on the birth certificate.

    Keir Starmer at it again..

He just needs to lean into the "I'm a boring bastard, you've got me, guilty, but I'm competent, and don't you want politics to be about being boring and competent again?" angle, it shouldn't be that hard, but he really is just a very very awkward person who's better suited to courtroom legalese...

It's always the best format of these IMO. Bunch of people standing at lecterns talking over each other is never illuminating by contrast. That said, both Starmer and Sunak have continually talked over the moderators in both debates so far, and it's a bad look.
