Lockdown and wildlife

A situation where you probably need to finish the bird off rather than allow the slow painful death (leaving it to the magpie to do it for you the best option). Whether I’d have it in me to do it I don’t know (I felt bad treading on two snails the other day) but it’s the best option for the bird.

"Nature is bloody in tooth and claw"

Probably what you don't want a 7 year old to witness, but it'll give her a better appreciation of nature and how dog eat dog it is out there.

How do I post a photo from my phone without it turning up as link? Sorry for being so hopeless with the IT!

1/2 mile from water and a a round trip that must have been knackering for the younger ones.

Turned round a corner on the way to work the other day and one of these bastards hissed at me and went for my ankle. Jumped about 3 foot in the air.
A few years back my cricket clubs first team opening bowler missed half a season in a swan related injury. Had a row with his his Mrs, went out for a walk to calm down round a local lake, came across a family of swans, the adults didn’t take kindly to him being there, chased him, he fell over and sprained his ankle.

Canada Goose? Can't stand them. Nasty things.

Spotted the entrance to a fox den under my shed a month or so back. Quite a common place for them to dig and make dens apparently. Seems the cubs are born around about April and start to emerge a month or so later.

Had seen the adult foxes about much more recently but at the weekend happened to be up at around daybreak and saw the two small cubs as well, one of which was happily trotting back to the entrance with my flip flop in its mouth.

Mixed opinions as what to do for the best. Not going to feed them and don’t want to tame them either, but they’re not causing any issues and are evidently quite happy (despite the dog) so will probably just leave them be.

Going to be difficult to capture an image of the cubs as they’re more cautious until they leave the den as young adults mid/late summer, but mum struts about most days marking her territory quite confidently.

The foxes in our street are all at all times of day, caught two of them shagging in my back garden in broad daylight last year. Next door feeds them every day and they’re in her garden all day. They’re a good way of getting rid of leftover pizza to be fair.

Back on the fox rollercoaster again….

Put a lot of work into the garden and it’s been looking great. Enjoying having the fox den under the shed and now the cubs are becoming young adults they’re out playing every evening. The dog goes loopy and chases them off when she’s outside but they seem to all get by and appear happy sharing the same space.

Went on holiday for a few weeks and with no dog around they had a field day. Was watching them remotely on a ring camera and it looked like every fox from the neighbourhood came round for a house party, we counted 8 one evening.

Anyway, got back and didn’t know whether to laugh or cry and in the end did a bit of both.

Mullered some of my best work ☹️:

The novelty of foxes is starting to wear off. I mean, I don’t mind them having fun when the dog is away but there’s having fun and then there’s mugging us right off:

foxes apparently use the same routes a lot of the time. There is a chance that if you refill that hole, they will redig it.
I've observed foxes in our garden climb over fences, a bit like a cat!

I've noticed recently that there seem to be more bees, butterflies etc nobbing about than earlier this year. Still not loads, but it seems to be getting better

On the flip side the wasps are having a bad year. Very few about for this time of year.

That's not a good thing either. They are also important pollinators and pest control for gardens.

Went for a shower downstairs yesterday evening and there’s a big fat frog in the shower tray staring at me.

Thought it must’ve sneaked in from the back garden while the doors were open and had gone in search of water, but then spotted a little puddle of water by the toilet bowl and a few wet frog-sized footprints leading to the shower.

Didn’t realise they could do that but Google says it does happen, bit like snakes I suppose.

I dunno, found it sort of yuk and amusing in equal measure.

This place gets weirder by the day.

Unless I’m mistaken that’s someone walking their dog with an African Grey on their shoulder.
I mean.. 🤷‍♂️
