The Summer 2024 Transfer Thread.

IMG_1471.pngOur big spending realistically hasn’t been that bad. Other than the obvious two exceptions.

But one of those was the most corrupt/stupid/unprecedneted (pick however many you like) transfers for all the reasons we’ve done to death and the other was destined to fail before he joined as he didn’t want to be here and joined a toxic environment.

The others have either been first team regulars for an extended period or sold for a decent fee.

I'd add Cutrone to the list, like a mini Guedes. Not sure we recouped a fat lot?
 
Nothing other than loan fees which got lower and lower each time.

It isn't just attitude and not wanting to be here with Guedes, he's a bad footballer.

I think for a club like us, spending those kinds of fees we need to be better than 50/50

And I think the more recent you go the more duds outweigh the hits.

Frankly, I'm more bullish about his skillset than Hwang's.

Tbf I don't think either are done any favors by being played in positions that don't really "fit" what they can bring to the table right now, but I like what I've seen from Jean enough that I genuinely think he could (not will, to be clear) grow into a wide midfielder (whereas Hwang I don't think will ever be anything other than a "second forward", if you like).

I really, really like Jean. Quelle surprise, I know.
 
The sympathy I have for him is his best position looks like it's that floating role behind a centre forward. The issue is we don't even have a centre forward or play with someone in that position, but if we did he'd probably be 3rd in line to play it. He's been disappointing when given one of those wide forward roles, which beit not his best position he should be offering more
 
I think we bought him when we were intent on playing some kind of variant of 4-3-3, but as we know we can't play a back four with any combination of our CHs unless we park two DMs right in front of them and adopt a far more conservative approach than we ever have under O'Neil. He looked alright on debut vs Liverpool in that kind of set up.

I can't see where he fits in a conventional 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 shape. If we did actually sign a proper #9 then perhaps you could have him and Cunha in behind the main man and play 3-4-2-1 (you would then have Lemina/Gomes playing more defensively than they normally do), lacks a bit of width perhaps given we get no tangible attacking output from Semedo. But then if Neto is still here then he'd be way ahead in the consideration.
 
New club, new country, new position; it's an understandable learning curve for me.

Hopefully he takes his chances next season, and I think he can. If he doesn't, we try to move on effectively.
 
Bellegarde just doesn't have enough about him to be anything more than a squad player at this level. He's just okay.

I get that we were in a bit of a panic at the end of the window last summer but I really don't know why we paid as much as we did for him.

Think this fair, although I agree with others it would be nice to see him in a role that suits him better. As you say as a squad player he would be ok, how much did we pay 12m?

But what's his best position? Coming to Wolves I'd have guessed CM, where he's not close to looking like getting a game at for us. It'll definitely be big question for next season.

I think that's the big issue with him, no-one seems to know, I thought he was a 10 but as others have mentioned we don't really play with one. He definitely doesn't look like a wide player. He's not that young either.
 
He reminds me a bit of OG Sessegnon, who from memory was another player who sort of flitted about not really doing a great deal with any consistency.
