O'Neil In, Out and Shaking it all about

We can't defend. 5 PL clean sheets all season, some of that is personnel based, but tactically both in terms of the space we offer the opposition and the way he tries to get players to do things which they aren't capable of, is on him.

My opinion of GON is still higher than it was when he was appointed and I wouldn't sack him unless a clearly better candidate is available and wants the job, but the last couple of months have left me with significant doubts.
I think this is where I am at. The problem is, who is better than GON who would be willing to work with the restrictions the clueless board place on the manager? I wouldn't put money on any of the candidates who might be willing to work with Shi being able to do anything better than O'Neil has done.

To be honest, my comments were born out of frustration and maybe a bit harsh.
For a very long time though, I’ve been reading on both the match thread and the verdict thread, ‘GON got it wrong’ and ‘this is on GON’.
I think this is fair, it remains to be seen whether Gary can see the problems and work out a solution, either with different personnel and or different tactics.

Nailed it.

Our board are worse than useless; they are utterly clueless (after 8 years) on how to sustainably run a successful football club.

As for that gnome Jeff Shi, my contempt and loathing for this person knows no bounds.
I've said it before, but my Jeff Shi highlight is when my brother decided to high-5 Laurie Dalrymple and literally wiped Shi out in doing so.

Laurie left the club shortly after......

GON press conference before Palace stank of back me or I leave. No manager as stated a few times talks about the summer plans like he did with games remaining. He's sending a massive message to Fosun.

Putting aside the pros or cons of Loppers, GON does seem to be even more on the front foot / ahead of the timeline. Would have been better for him if his football hadn’t been so wretched for the last few months, but guess he’s still got credit in the bank. With the West Ham gig gone though is there a likely move for him?

Quick scan of all the clubs staying up and it’s only Brighton likely to be making a change right?

"Wretched"?

Results have been poor, but have performances been **that** bad? It certainly doesn't feel as poor as the Lop 5 and 6 nil defeats of last season, even the 5-1 against City still had effort if not quality.

Then there were the Lage performances where the players clearly had lost all faith in the manager, they were largely dire after the late collapse at Arsenal.

Could be a trick of perspective. I didn’t see those games in the flesh. I have been at every home game and, yeah, I’m happy to stick with wretched. I’m also open to the observation he’s been setup to fail. Like DE said, the end of season body language was worse at the end of the Lage season, it it came with the comfort (half misplaced) of believing it only nailed on his departure and an obvious improvement to follow.

Absolutely. It was very Lop without the Spanish journalist.

If they can’t retain GON after only 2 seasons of management then they’ll look like the complete buffoons they really are.

He’s not going anywhere. It’s guaranteed work (and money). There’s no guaranteed work out there for him
Can’t fault the logic of that at all, but when relationships, including professional ones, get too broken logic can go out the window. He’ll also be mindful of his reputation being pretty high right now, value that will be lost if the form at the start of next season is simply the same as at the end of this. It could be, without it being his fault.

There isn't but he's being set up to fail.

If we sell 3 first XI players and don't replace them, as we didn't last summer, I don't think any manager could stop us going down.

If he then loses the first 5 games he'll get the sack and Shi will say that he just wasn't up to the job.

He's a convenient shit shield for Shi.

In that scenario he might (maybe not) be better off owning his own narrative. Top journo’s still love him (like the not popular here Henry Winter who raves about him, and Max…) and he’ll simply be doing what Loppers did before him, so it stacks up well on the CV. Bad result always take a bit more explaining away, even if they’re not your fault.

Exactly, squad composition is a bigger reason for form dip than the coach, and out of the 3 people at the club involved in that he has the least influence but most likely to lose his job.

Jeff last summer

The positive thing is that FFP is based on a rolling number, season by season, so if we do manage it well this summer, next summer we will be more free financially.

AI yourself out of that Jeff baby

Really is something of an anti Fosun / Jeff thing going on here. A lot of supposition and guesswork.
None of us knows what the Summer will bring so why all the negativity around a few remarks made by GON?

Because of the past god-knows how many transfer windows, culminating the farce that was last summer's window.

Sure they will make mistakes. They've also done some good business. But no credit for that or for keeping us in the Prem.
